Ultraman Forever DVD Box Set Announced

Posted on December 7, 2013 at 11:04 pm by Kiryu under Ultraman

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Ultra Series. In Celebration of the event, Chiayo Productions will be releasing Ultraman Forever, a DVD box set containing the first six series from the original Ultraman to Ultraman Leo and the box set will be released state side. Price and a release date were not announced as of this posting.

The thai based company is rather infamous for being in constant legal dispute with Tsuburaya Production for the overseas distribution rights of the Ultra Series.

Is this a release you will be supporting? Discuss in the thread!

There's a few things off, starting here. Ultraman doesn't have a 50th anniversary until 2016. Tsuburaya has a reason to celebrate this year, as the studio has its 50th, but Chaiyo has literally nothing to celebrate right now other than the Ultraman Forever book release. Since no release date is mentioned anywhere, if something was actually tied to the anniversary and not the book/just because, we might not see them for some time. Unless this somehow fits Chaiyo's narrative of Sompote's claim to his hand in Ultraman's creation, there is no 50th yet and Chaiyo is either jumping on Tsuburaya's current branding or are getting started early.

Second is Rising Sun's interpretation of "six seasons". Chaiyo has no legal hold on anything from Ultraman Leo. That series is 100% Tsuburaya's and they can't touch it. This instead would be referring to Ultra Q, which already got released via Shout Factory, followed by Ultraman, Ultraseven, Return of Ultraman, Ultraman Ace, and Ultraman Taro.

Third is the actual lack of claim of a boxed set anywhere on the site! No preorders, no product images or pages, nothing but that banner claiming all six series they can release are coming soon as DVD sets. That could be as simple as "hey, Shout Factory picked up the others, they'll come out whenever" and nothing more (yet). A full boxed set makes some sense as a way to get people in the US to actually care about stuff like Ace or Taro on DVD, because individual series releases would sell like crap, but there's no actual indication of a boxed set. If there's more info, it's not out on the Ultraman Forever website.

I'd rather buy a knockoff Ultraman Zearth Soft Vinyl toy with a Baltan head and a funky color scheme.

I want this to be cool but with the actual 50th anniversary not until 2016 it rings a bit hollow.

This is based on the episode count the Ultraman Forever website gives. If you don't interpret "season" as a full series, then you come dramatically short of the episode count specified. Though even if you do include everything from Ultra Q to Leo, including the banned Ultra Seven episode, it still comes up an episode short, so that could be a typo on their part. (which still doesn't make sense as they do say "more than" but that's typical of Chaiyo)

What might reconcile the episode count is if Ultraman got counted twice - once for the classic English dub, and once more for the subtitled Japanese version. I don't know how else they would end up with that many episodes since the only other series Chaiyo has is Jumborg Ace.

It's definitely not because Chaiyo somehow has the rights to Leo. No matter how muddled this episode count may be, Leo is as untouchable to them as Tiga or Mebius.
