One of the caveats of releasing a free comic on Free Comic Book Day is the hope that as fans rush to get their free comics that you’ll pick up new readers to your current storyline. As luck would have it – the Power Rangers are currently dealing with the biggest event in the brand’s history – the evil Lord Drakkon and the Shattered Grid event! The regular comics are selling out everywhere as fans rush to see what happens next – and who survives Lord Drakkon! This comic does an EXCELLENT job in both expanding the lore of the comic book universe as well as answering questions fans had about both Lord Drakkon‘s world as well as “well why don’t they just do XYZ”.
Fans following the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics through Issue 26 will be rewarded knowing that this comic follows in line as an “off-shoot” sequel – like a 26A if you will – to the mainline comic. The story follows Zordon as he searches for answers on how to deal with Lord Drakkon, fearful that this is the strongest and most dangerous foe that he has ever dealt with.
Recent lore brought up in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 025 is explored further, with three new “characters” being introduced (we say “characters” because … well … go get the free comic!). Kyle Higgins and Ryan Parrott do an incredible job at creating a story that will draw in current readers and reward them while also managing to give a recap of exactly what Shattered Grid is as well as exactly who Lord Drakkon is and where he came from for new readers interested in all the hype surrounding both Power Rangers and the Shattered Grid.
Longtime fans of the Power Rangers franchise are also rewarded (or punished?) because Kyle Higgins and Ryan Parrott, as they always do, sprinkle in easter eggs and nods to the older fans of the franchise. In short – we all know Zordon‘s eventual fate in Power Rangers In Space. Another layer to his fate is added here which will make it even more emotional than it was already. One of the biggest questions about Lord Drakkon‘s universe is also answered!
The artwork by Diego Calindo is stunning and rewarding. You’ll finish the book wanting to see more of his work and what he could do with the Power Rangers.
This is an incredible free comic to get new readers on board with the Shattered Grid event and with Kyle Higgins’ Power Rangers stories. It manages to reward current readers with expanded lore and easter eggs without actually advancing the story. This means that you can miss this issue and NOT miss anything in the actual story of the Shattered Grid. But if you’re loving Shattered Grid and Kyle Higgins’ work on Power Rangers, you NEED to pick up this book. 10/10
