Ultra-Act Dark Zagi Gallery

Posted on January 26, 2014 at 1:08 am by Den-O under TokuNation, TokuNation Spotlights, Ultraman

Were you a fan of Let’s Watch Wednesdays with Ultraman Nexus? If so then you’re in luck, on top of our previous Ultraman Nexus Junis Red & Junis Blue galleries we have a special web exclusive treat for you! Today we have a gallery of Ultra-Act Dark Zagi!

Zagi himself is a dark clone or copy of Nexus’ original form, Ultraman Noa. As such he has immense power at his control and is wildly violent. First rearing his ugly mug  in the Nexus finale, Zagi (or at least some version of him) would later return in Ultraman Ginga briefly. Though not the first or last dark giant or evil/dark Ultra, Zagi is certainly one of the most vile. Schemeing for decades towards his ultimate goal Zagi has gone down as one of the great Ultra villains. And this figure more than lives up to the image of that character, a welcome addition to any Ultra-Act collection.

After a LONG break in between release we're back, with more goodies from Ultraman Nexus! A few months ago we did a Let's Watch Wednesdays segment on this show and to coincide with it we brought you galleries of Ultra-Act Nexus Junis Red & Junis Blue.

Ultra-Act Dark Zagi is the newest release in the Nexus series of UA's and it does not disappoint. (The companion piece Ultra-Act Ultraman Noa will be out this month and we'll be bringing you a gallery of it ASAP)

A little background for those who missed this LWW segment. Dark Zagi is a being created by a race of aliens known as the visitors. The beings cloned Zagi from the powerful Ultraman Noa, after witnessing his ability to protect life. During the process however Zagi went insane and destroyed The Visitors homeworld. Gathering the Space Beasts together Zagi rampaged across the universe. An ensuing battle with Ultraman Noa, and a brief run in with the Showa Ultra Universe, would render Zagi without physical form and Noa almost entirely expended of energy.

Both Noa and the visitors wound up on Earth predicting the return of Zagi there. Zagi arrived nearly 18 years before the beginning of the TV series and inhabited the body of a human who would one day become an integral part of TLT. Using this guise he killed and manipulated anyone and everything he could until the final episode of the series when he could finally seize Ultramans power to regain his original form. But just as before the mighty Noa rose up to defeat Zagi. A version of Zagi would later appear in Ultraman Ginga with much of the same rampaging personality.

Now for the figure, for starters Zagi is absolutely gorgeous. Of all the recent Ultra-Acts which take advantage of improved design and quality in the line, Zagi is one of the best. Right up there with Ultra Seven Renewal and Father of Ultra. The deep almost blood red markings accent his black body very well and it gives off the most devilish look the form of an Ultra can achieve.

Zagi may not have tons of accessories, but what he comes with is perfect for him. Of course there's the standard extra sets of hands, and even a beam effect to replicate his Lightning Zagi Attack. However this release goes the extra distance by including an explosion effect piece. One meant to go with Ultraman Noa to replicate their final struggle in the last episode of Ultraman Nexus. With Zagi in Space and Noa in Japan their twin beams met in the atmosphere with explosive force. This effect piece appears to be specifically molded on both sides to only accept either Zagi or Noa beam effects. The Nexus used in this photo shoot can sort of peg into it, but not securely. Also included is a small display base to hold this effect piece.

Zagi has a fantastic range of motion, especially in his neck where it's the most needed to replicate his animalistic movements and contortions. This figure does the absolute best job of capturing the wild chaotic nature of this character. It's a welcome addition to any Ultra-Act fans collection.

    Great gallery as always Den-O!

Zagi looks awesome and the explosion effect is so clever! Can't wait to see him alongside Noa.

Ahh, Nexus. I got confused around episode 30, but I should have kept going! This guy looks great.

Brilliant gallery as always! Although you've now reminded me I need to start picking up the Nexus figures at some point...

They are simply put, excellent. Junis Red & Blue are very very solid releases. The unfortunate loose right elbow on my Red being the only issue. Zagi is just devilish perfection quality wise.

I wondered what his name was since seeing him in that magazine Reggie sent me. Absolutely beautiful work, Den. I love that shade of red on that deep dark black.

So if this is Dark Zagi, is there such a thing as a not Dark Zagi?

No. In Nexus the evil giants are called "Dark (insert name)" in much the say way that typical beings from the land of light are named "Ultraman (insert name)".

In this show we had Dark Faust, Dark Mephisto, Dark Mephisto Zwei, & Dark Zagi. A proposed ultimate form for Zagi was intended to be used in the finale as well. But since the show was cut short for ratings Dark Lucifer never came to be

It's an excellent Ultra series. My problem in the past with the franchise is that it's been a bit hokey and less than serious. But Nexus always had an air of urgency to it. There was always some really horrible darkness around the corner with barely a glimmer of light to fight it. The show really hammered home how hard the reality of trying to fight giant monsters and such AND keep it a secret from the community, without endangering the populace, could be.
