Let’s Watch Wednesdays Week 6 Kamen Rider Den-O 16-18

Posted on July 2, 2014 at 9:34 pm by Den-O under Kamen Rider, TokuNation, TokuNation Spotlights

Did you bring your ticket? Because it’s officially Let’s Watch Wednesdays again here at TokuNation! And Kamen Rider Den-O is on the tracks!

The strain of 4 Imagin has finally begun to set in on Ryutarou. At the same time an old friend returns to town, of course a new character means a new Imagin is here to ruin the past! Specifically a past tied to Ryutarou’s own. And the revelation of the hooded man, of his past with Airi. The man known as Sakurai Yuuto. A watch, a solemn lake, the hooded man, and a stranger with a Ticket,  the past present & future are all colliding.

Fun Fact #6
Kintaros, is the 3rd Imagin to join the Den-Liner crew. And his incredible strength and kind heart are based on the legend of the Golden Boy, Kintaro! Kintaro is known to have a few minor differences in his origin, but they generally wind up with the young boy in the forests of Mount Kintoko.

It’s undisputed however that he was strong, fierce, large (or rather plump), and carried a hatchet from a very young age. He befriended the animals of the forests, some say he even learned their languages, he fought demons, sumo wrestled bears, cut trees, and generally was a rambunctious child. Tales of his strength have been spoken of for years since. Kintaros the Imagin bears the motif of a strong golden bear and carries the type of hatchet that Kintaro is most popularly thought to have had.

The pain of 4 Imagin on Ryutarou's body is unbearable.

His connection to the past of a friend will bring him face to face with the hooded man.

The man his sister once loved, in two places, from two times!

Sakurai Yuuto has arrived, with a ticket of his own. A new (or is it old?) rider will be born!

The past, present, and future all explosively collide this week!

    So Let's Watch Den-O 16-18!

Let me say this to start! Yuuto and Deneb are a great comedy duo!

Jin and J were the Yuto and Deneb of Super Sentai, it's what makes those two great.

    This guy gets it.

But we should probably save discussion of that pairing for next week since neither of them is properly introduced at all this week.

    Who wears two hats!

Seriously, though, what's up with the baseball cap underneath the rain hat?

Playing a bit of catch-up with the last episode from last week.

This is definitely Den-O at one of its goofiest moments. The whole hostage scenario was weird and pretty fun in how increasingly low-key it got. The payoff joke at the end was pretty fun, too, even when you know it's coming on a re-watch. At times I think it gets a little too goofy, though. Airi goes from a little spacey to full-on ditz in these episodes, the Imagin is really annoying, and I have never wanted to punch Ozaki in his stupid rubber face more.

Overall a couple of good episodes, but they can drag on a little.

The filler arcs really do drag unfortunately. As the show that began the 2-part story formula it suffers the most from it.

And I never got the two hats, or why we never see his face, except for in the opening you can see the older Sakurai in the cafe walking.

So far, that's the only part of the show I actually laughed at.

    Coffee-tachi 17-18

This is as far as I got in my aborted rewatch from 2012. Got up to episode 17 and then got distracted by something else. Everything from here on out should be a lot less recent in my memory and therefore more enjoyable and exciting (except the Ozaki and Miura bits - those were never enjoyable in any way).

A lot of important stuff here, especially in episode 18. Now that the Imagin are all introduced the plot is really starting. I liked the Imagin stuff this week, too, the scene with Kintaros trying to leave, in particular. He always was my favorite of Ryotaro's Imagin. Favorite Imagin of them all, though? We'll meet him tomorrow.

And, because I'm curious to see just how damn often it shows up:

Stargazing flashback count: 3 (once in the previous LWW and now twice in episode 17)

That damn flashback, and the one to the lake, happen an infuriating number of times.
