Koichi Kawakita, Heisei-Era Godzilla Special Effects Director, Has Passed Away

Posted on December 10, 2014 at 10:34 pm by Paladin under Godzilla

We have sadly been informed of the death of Koichi Kawakita a long-serving Toho special effects expert.

Kawakita’s work in the world of kaiju can be seen in the Heisei-era revival, beginning with Godzilla VS Biollante and ending with Godzilla VS Destoroyah. The new miniature effects and action sequences created by Kawakita during these films marked a tremendous step forward for the series, with some fans still considering this the greatest Godzilla era ever.

Koichi Kawakita was 72 years old. May he rest in peace…

Kawakita's work covers "Godzilla VS Biollante" through "Godzilla VS Destoroyah." He was a major influence in reshaping the King of the Monsters for a new audience.

    May he rest in peace...

Very sad. Unfortunately it appears we will end up losing a lot of the great people from the early days. The problem with growing up.

    RIP

Oh... just yesterday I watched Godzilla vs Destoroyah again and nearly cried during the end, and now I read this and feel like crying again. Rest in peace Kawakita, your work gave me great joy and fun since I was a child. I thank you for everything you did to create my favorite Godzilla movies.
