Power Rangers Dino Charge 5 Inch Puzzler Gallery

Posted on September 18, 2015 at 10:00 am by Chris under Power Rangers

It’s getting close to the fall and that means new Power Rangers Dino Charge toys are starting to trickle down to even the smaller markets across the country! And in this new wave of 5″ figures are the villains – figures that fans have been asking Bandai America to release for many years now. And our first look at the new wave of villains is none other than the Puzzler!

This figure is rather limited in its articulation and posability, so there’s only 13 pictures to take a peak at – but we look in depth at the detailing on this incredibly sculpted figure. To check out the full gallery and to read the review, simply click here! Please share your thoughts on this figure with the rest of us! Have you picked it up? Do you plan to? Sound off in the discussion!

Usually I have some snappy one-liner to throw at the start of a gallery and review but this time I don't. Puzzler! He likes ... puzzles! Aren't you puzzled by his puzzling Puzzler name?

In the latest wave of Power Rangers Dino Charge 5" figures hitting stores now we have some new villains included based on popular demand by fans to Bandai America, who have listened and thus released some villain figures. The first figure we'll be looking at is none other than Puzzler!

    The Figure
The thing that should strike you immediately about this figure is the incredible amount of detail that went in to the sculpting of the mold. It is a BEAUTIFUL looking figure. The biggest downside is the articulation - as in, bendable knees, legs that can move forward and backward, and two arms that can move up or down (to a point). And that's it. Six points of articulation. It's like a large version of Star Wars The Force Awakens 3.75 figures with one bonus piece of articulation.

    The Accessory
You get a flag on a pole that says "GOAL" on it. The flag is sculpted to look like it is waving in the wind. At the very least they look to have painted the flag purple while leaving the stick the stock yellow plastic color.

This one is quick and easy.

    The Good!

    • The detail and sculpting is beautiful
    • I love villain figures - and thus I love Puzzler

    The Bad!
    • 6 points of limited articulation really hurts this figure
    • The flag pole can't sit in his hand, it just falls through, so he can't "hold" it as much as he "rests it on the ground"

    The Conclusion!
If you're interested in collecting villain figures then this is an obvious pick up when you find him (if you find him!). If you're a casual collector or you are on the fence, I suggest passing on this guy. The fans cried out for villain figures, and now we're getting villain figures, and if Puzzler is going to be the standard going forward, I'd rather go back to not having any villain figures at all. In 2015 we need more than 6 points of LIMITED articulation on a figure. This is an easy pass unless you're specifically wanting villain figures.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. Villains cost more to make because they're generally completely unique sculpts. Bandai has been able to get away with giving the villains about as much articulation as the Rangers in recent years because there's only been a couple, but when you start to make more you're gonna have to make concessions to keep them within the budget/price point. When Bandai was in their heyday of making villains they were always minimally articulated compared to the Rangers.

We're not talking about basic cut shoulder and hips like Hasbro is doing with their 3 & 3/4 stuff these days. Puzzler has swivel hinge shoulders and hips, which is technically 2 point of articulation each. Then there's knees on top of that, and it's not like his design allows for any kind of head movement. So I really don't see anything to complain about here. I don't want to see a good thing get ruined because people have unrealistic expectations.

It's not unrealistic expectations to expect more than a body with moving arms and legs (with a note that the arms have no bicep joint). I still like the figure - but it's definitely on the lower tier of what we've come to expect even from Bandai America.

I'd rather set the bar high and eventually reach it than accept a "Well, at least it's ____". That mentality destroys things - from TV shows, to comic books, and yes, toy lines as well.

If you have the mentality of "Well, this is as good as it gets so let's be happy", you're not doing anyone any favors, including yourself. I appreciate the villains - I do - and trust me I understand the toy industry better than 90% of the self-proclaimed experts (used to work in the toy industry). I get that there's cost attributed to it and I get that cost played a major part in a lot of the decisions because there are so many 5" figures coming out in this line that are not simple body-swaps like in Super Megaforce. I get it. At the same time, it's okay to expect more.

I feel the only thing else he really needs is a rist joint, to properly hold his scythe.

Yay, he looks awesome! To tell ya the truth, I'm pretty surprised he got that much movement in the legs. I still love the look of him, and I hope I can find it!
