Number 5 – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 20 – Main Cover
Cover art by Jamal Campbell
In Issue 20 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fans are treated to a brand new story that we never knew existed – a team of Power Rangers from 1969 sent to the moon to stop the mysterious Psycho Green Ranger! Featuring a female Red Ranger, female Black Ranger, and male Pink and Yellow Rangers, this all-new team from the past battles Psycho Green Ranger on the moon and – spoiler – not everyone survives the encounter! The origins of the mysterious woman known as Grace Sterling are revealed in this issue that sets a new story line following the Lord Drakkon arch. This cover was tops and received a lot of attention for the unique and creative original story around a new cast of Rangers.
Number 4 – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 17 – Power Sword Variant Cover
Cover art by Miguel Mercado
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are still dealing with the aftermath of their encounter with Lord Drakkon and the alternate reality. Zordon is still absent leaving the teens to take care of the world on their own. With Rita Repulsa also no longer in the picture, the Power Rangers find themselves working to save people from natural disasters. The issue ends with the beginning of the new story involving the mysterious US Government employee Grace Sterling. This cover is simply beautiful and the red and white contrast each other perfectly over the other variations of this cover with the other Rangers.
Number 3 – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 09 – Second Print Lord Drakkon Cover
Cover art by Goñi Montes
The Power Rangers have their final battle with the mysterious Black Dragon! But the price of victory is high as both Tommy and Billy are presumed dead as they’ve gone missing from the battle following a strange explosion. But the truth is that they’ve been transported to a different world … a world where the Green Ranger stayed evil and conquered with Rita Repulsa! Lord Drakkon is finally revealed, and this cover stood out as homage to Issue 00 which featured all the Power Rangers holding their helmets.
Number 2 – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 05 – San Diego Comic Con 2016 Cover
Cover art by Goñi Montes
Zack, the Mighty Morphin Black Ranger, recounts the time when Rita Repulsa originally recruited him to become the evil Green Ranger! Obviously he turned down the offer but failed to tell his team and the pressure weighs on him considerably. The issue ends with Rita Repulsa hearing a mysterious voice that we come to know as Lord Drakkon. We chose this cover as Number 2 because it again pays homage to the Issue 00 covers but also features a Power Rangers exclusive power up form – the Armored Black Ranger which only made his appearance once in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and never in the Japanese counterpart Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger.

Number 1 – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 00 – All 10 Helmet Covers

Have you ever seen a Issue 00 comic that served more as a promotional tool than an actual starting point for a comic demand over $100 for a cover variant? Well you did with this issue of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The Armored Red Ranger variant was exclusive to a select tier of comic book shops and extremely limited (we’re talking a number in the 10’s). The White Ranger variant cover was fetching $100 plus on eBay, and the book received a couple of reprints bringing even more covers. But it is also the iconic image that symbolized the beginning of quite possibly one of the biggest surprise comic book stories in decades thanks to Kyle Higgins, BOOM! Studios, and the team at Saban Brands. With these covers being so iconic it was a no-brainer that they would all be Number 1 in a Top 5 list.
