Pacific Rim Sequel In Early Stages

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 4:21 pm by Shin Densetsu under General Tokusatsu News

While interviewing Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro, Indiewire let out that there is a sequel being worked on, in its early stages:

Indiewire: You’re in the very early stages of a “Pacific Rim” sequel. If you do that would you shoot it in native 3D?
Guillermo del Toro: Yes. Provided, at that point, that the technology is becoming easier and easier…

He then talked about 3D conversion:

Indiewire: Initially you didn’t want it to be converted…
Guillermo del Toro: Even then they were super respectful. By then we were already getting ILM shots. I was realizing that out of 100 shots, maybe 10% of the shots were risky. They said, “If we go 2D on those shots, we can do it.” Then I gave them my list of conditions. They spent twice of what they normally spend on [this process], because they gave me the chance to pay ILM to do every single shot in native 3D. They aren’t being converted. So all the big 3D effects shots are being done by ILM from the get go. Normally they give a movie a 14 to 16 week conversion time [for 3D]. I started the conversion back in September. So it’s six months for conversion. It’s very classy.

Also attached is a blueprint image of the Pacific Rim Strike Eureka, because it looks cool!

Not interested in the least in the 3D (I wear bifocals, not pogressives, so the 3D images "break" around the line in my glasses), but the fact that there is a sequel in development does not shock me in the least. Might take him as long to make it as Hellboy 2, but hey, there you go.

WOW! Already talking sequel huh? They must really expect this movie to do well. It does look pretty awesome.

The first one better be everything they promised if they're talking sequel already. it'd be nice to have one american original toku that wasn't godaweful.

Honestly, I am very skeptical. I like the idea, and hearing GLaDOS in the trailer was awesome, but it just looks like another dumb stereotypical action movie. Black commander that will probably get killed halfway through to motivate the main character to do his best. There will probably be a character that gets laughed at for being a virgin, and a character that will be a dumb jock, and they have already shown the Asian girl that just has to know martial arts.

Well. Least you didn't compare it to Reel Steel and Transformers again.

They always have plans in motion for a sequel to movies like these, so if it's a hit they can start moving quickly. Battleship and John Carter had sequels in the planning stages too.

I would say at least that Guillermo del Toro has a better track record than most directors. If it was anyone else I may be less enthusiastic, but I think with him at the helm we might see something with a little more substance than the average action film.

Ok, if you have a time machine, tell me who wins the Superbowl.

Anyways, I'm hyped for Pacific Rim and I hope it does well in the theaters, unlike Dredd; which was a fantastic movie that bombed because the marketing made it look shit.
