Dread Central has reported that the following King Kong movies will be release on Blu-ray on April 1st this year:
- King Kong VS Godzilla
- King Kong Escapes
Synopsis can be seen below:
King Kong VS Godzilla
When an underhanded pharmaceutical company goes to a remote tropical island to steal King Kong for advertising purposes, they get more than they bargained for when the gigantic ape attacks an unsuspecting village and an enormous octopus. Meanwhile, far below the sea, a submarine crew unleashes reptilian terror when they melt a block of ice and release the ferocious Godzilla from his icy lair. When both destructive monsters descend on Tokyo, it’s a fight that holds the future of mankind in the balance in this knock-out film that was the first theatrical release to bring its larger-than-life contenders to the big screen in glorious color.

Hrm, no confirmation as to whether or not we're getting both the American and the Japanese cut of KING KONG VS GODZILLA.
I'm sure we'll be getting just the American cut re-released, considering it's "bare bones" status, but...hey, a g-fan can hope can't he?
Guyver Spawn says
The Japanese version will never see the light of day in the US. Universal is too cheap to pay for it.

The only way we will ever see the Jp version in the US is if someone that actually cares about the Godzilla franchise sub licenses it from Universal.

Nah, there are people who care, but they haven't had a great track record. Last time someone cared enough about the franchise to do the fans justice, Toho screwed up royally with the Blu-Ray features and the whole thing kind of imploded on them. Hey, at least Tokyo Shock tried though...that's more than most.

Yeah, sorry, I am not willing to give any defense towards Media Blasters for other reasons, but what happened with the Godzilla stuff is their own fault. I think Toho was being a little unreasonable, but MB was being stupid at the same time and got what they deserved. It sucks, but that is the way it is.
I was thinking more along the lines of Criterion. It would be so amazing if they some day released a complete box set in the same quality they do of all their movies. I don't think they have the man power for something that big, but I think they have the dedication to it if they wanted to.

No surprise that these are barebones releases; Universal did the same thing with KKvG and KKE when they released them on DVD. As budget releases, they were perfectly nice DVDs of the American versions of the films; I expect these BRDs to be of similar quality and scope. I like both of these films quite a bit, and as budget releases ($13.99 each according to Dread Central), I may pick them up.
I have boots of the Japanese versions of both films, and it is always interesting to see what was cut and what was not.
KKvG is almost like a different movie for whole sections of it, with the major cuts-and-inserts in the first half, before the second half gets more in line with the original. I will say that I do like the use of the stock footage of the destruction when Kong and Goji crash into the ocean (from The Mysterians IIRC).
King Kong Escapes is more subtle with what was cut. The sequence on Tokyo Tower is the main bit which is changed, as the bit where Linda Miller is hanging off the edge and has to be saved by Akira Takarada is much longer in the uncut film. I mean, they have to get a bunch of engineers there and rig up a harness and the whole nine, all while Kong and Mechanikong are fighting. In the US version, she's hanging, she gets grabbed, and it's all over much quicker. Overall the US version is a bit more tightly put together, but not a huge departure from the original film in the grand scheme of things.
Dr Kain says
I've never seen the Jp version of KKE. In fact, I haven't seen KKE since the last time I saw it on TNT during Monstervision back in 1997ish.
I might pick these up, if for nothing else, to at least own them on BD. I do have the Region 2 DVD of KKvG, and it seems like Toho is never going to put it out on BD, so I might as well at least own it on BD in some format.
