One of the most memorable and for a time most frightening villains the Power Rangers have ever faced, Lord Zedd has always been a fan favorite. Over the years Zedd has had a mere handful of action figures produced in his likeness, but it looks like things are changing for the former Emperor of Evil. Released just recently as a Toy ‘R’ Us Exclusive is the Power Rangers Legacy Lord Zedd figure!
This figure was also sold as a “shared exclusive” via the Entertainment Earth booth at San Diego Comic-Con, which is where the figure used for this gallery was purchased. Legazy Lord Zedd is one of 8 Legacy figures currently making the rounds to Toys ‘R’ Us across the US and Canada, however he is the only villain in the line so far. Packaged in a deliciously vintage style Might Morphin’ Power Rangers box, and equipped with his mighty staff, Lord Zedd is ready to menace your 5″ ranger figure collection!

It's been a long time coming but the 5" Power Rangers Legacy figures have finally begun to hit store shelves! Ironically, the first of these figures to make it out to retail is the only non-ranger in the line, none other than the original Emperor of Evil himself, Lord Zedd!
Be sure before you take a look at this gallery to stop in with our good buddy Baltmatrix and check out his video review on our front page!
Packaging
To start off, Lord Zedd comes in the most awesomely retro 90's packaging possible. I know all the 5" Legacy figures come in the same style box but for Zedd to to be the first release, such a gnarly evil villain in this bright loud packaging, is just priceless. The Legacy boxes are a call back to the same triangularly shaped boxes that the old 8" Mighty Morphin Power Rangers figures were once packed in. Though triangular is definitely an odd shape to go with for retail as most of these figures I've come across in the wild are stacked several rows deep "locking" the triangles together. This means that more than a few of the figures face away from potential customers.
Funnily enough this packaging is more of a callback to season 1 of MMPR, and Zedd didn't appear until season 2. In fact the bit on the back of the box, "The Story" specifically details the season 1 struggles of the rangers against Rita Repulsa making no mention of Zedd. Though his personal bio is posted just below this. A cross sell for the Legacy rangers themselves is also present here.
Main Figure
Beyond the packaging we come to the main event Lord Zedd himself. Honestly there isn't a lot to say about the little guy. I'll say that he is a bit on the small side. Though obviously scaled properly and well enough with other 5" ranger figures, Legacy or otherwise, he's not quite bulky enough to me for his size.
The sculpted details on the body are rather nice. The musculature is done very well as are the veins which crisscross his body. His spine and brain feature a surprising amount of detail as well, however the face itself falls a bit short on the sculpt. The details are very soft and undefined. The paint apps on the head of mine are a bit sloppy as well. For a figure that I paid $20 for at the EE booth at SDCC, and which consumers will pay $16-20 for at retail, I would think more care would go into the paint apps. Seeing as the paint apps for this guy are really the only things setting him apart from other past Zedd figures, they should be applied more consistently.
Speaking of them though the paint apps along the rest of the figure are more or less consistent. Many people have pointed out with surprise that the back is painted. The older Super Legends Lord Zedd did not have a painted back despite having the same type of sculpted detail, but being that it was an older and larger figure at a lower price point I think that's forgivable.
Legacy Lord Zedd has a decent amount of articulation as well. Hinged knees, hips, shoulders, and elbows, swivel shins & head, rotating fists, etc. Not to shabby though he could definitely benefit from some ankles. You won't get any crazy dynamic poses out of this guy, but he's no different from the other current 5" ranger figures so he'll fit right in with them.
Accessories
Short & simple. Lord Zedd includes his trademark staff, but that's the only accessory he gets. When compared to the simultaneously releasing Legacy Power Rangers themselves and their weapons which have the ability to combined into the Power Blaster, Zedd feels like he drew the short straw. This staff is the most accurate one we've gotten thus far though since it has the actual pointed bottom end rather than a flat surface.
It would have been nice for him to come with "make my monster grow" bombs or perhaps in my dreams for him to come with some generic version of his throne. But I guess I'll just have to make do with Zed sitting far too snugly in my Iron Throne replica for now.
Final Thoughts
When compared to the Super Legend, Legacy Lord Zedd does feel a little less impressive. While it has some killer retro packaging and some nice paint apps, it doesn't feel very imposing. For me personally, that's mostly because of the scale, though I understand 5" is the standard for Ranger figs. But for his size he just doesn't seem to have the appropriate kind of bulk in his sculpt. I can't help but think that despite the drawbacks of other older figures, that Legacy Lord Zedd feels like a little bit of a let down. As someone who was truly truly excited for a nice new Zedd figure, I can't say I'm overwhelmed by this one.
On the other hand if this newer type of 5" figure is more your speed then this figure may fit the bill for what you want a lot better. It does look appropriate with Legacy & Mainline ranger figures. And at the end of the day I believe size preferences would be the biggest deciding factor in whether someone buys this Zedd, or an older toy of the character.

Zedd sitting on that throne works better than I could have ever imagined.

The throne looks like it was made for Zedd. He has an awesome design, but I just couldnt buy this guy at full price.
