The power is on for the final time at TokuNation!
We’ve taken a look at 6 figures so far in Bandai of America’s Power Rangers 5″ Legacy Line for the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie, and today we wrap up our coverage of this line with the 7th and final figure! Rounding out the 6 movie rangers is the Legacy Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie White Ranger!
As with our previously reviewed Movie Rangers this figure marks the first time ever that the Movie White Ranger has been portrayed properly in toy form. Oddly enough, though this figure comes with fewer accessories than all the others, it somehow winds up being the best executed of the set. The Movie White Ranger may not come with much but he does come with his one and only weapon, the trusty talking tiger saber, Saba! We break down the ins and outs of this figure, both positive & negative, in the review after the jump.
We’ve attached a selection of images to this post but the full gallery thread contains over 40 images! We’ve tried to fully showcase this figure and in fact the entire Legacy Movie lineup with this gallery. In the coming months TokuNation will return with more movie themed galleries as we prep for the 20th anniversary of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie! It's Morphin Time!
TokuNation is back with it's FINAL installment in our recent series of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie galleries! The 7th and final figure in Bandai of America's Lecay 5" Movie line, the Movie White Ranger!
Packaging
If you haven't picked up a Power Rangers Movie Legacy figure by now, the Movie White Ranger follows the same basic formula. Packaged in a triangular box Bandai has done the best job they could at evoking the look of the vintage toys from the original movie toyline. The black & white color scheme may look a little more drab but it's still a great package. Showcased on the front of the box is a call out to the 1995 film itself and to further that connection on the back is a brief description of the films plot. Even going so far as to mention Ivan Ooze & Dulcea.
A brief bio about the White Ranger (Tommy) is also given. Oddly the bio only makes mention of his Falconzord, when actually these figures are based on the rangers pre-ninja based suits from early into the film. The rangers received the ninja zords/powers after losing their original powers. Though the Tigerzord and other Dino & Thunder zords were never seen in the film, Tommy calls out "Tigerzord!" to morph in the initial fight, and the Tigerzord coin is still present both on his belt and chest on this figure. An oddity but not necessarily a detriment depending on how picky you are. More odd though I suppose was the total ignorance of the Thunder Zords having even existed in this films continuity.
Figure
As far as 5" figures go the Movie White Ranger at first glance appears to offer more than the standard. To start you should know that this line of 5" Movie figures is literally the first time ever that the actual movie designs have been put into figure form. The original toys were mere metallic repaints of the TV show toys in movie packaging. But this figure is the real deal. From a sculpt and detail perspective alone this figure is leagues beyond the generally simple toys of the normal Power Rangers retail lines. Where those 5" figures feel flat and artificially roided out, the movie rangers are covered in armored technological detailing that really goes a long way to replicating the look of the actual costumes. Since these suits were more armor than spandex they had a lot of detail to them, so I'm pleased that the toy has managed to capture that. Though finer details at least on this figure are a bit superior to the other 5 rangers released in this line. Though the head still feels a little undefined.
On the articulation front the figure has much of what we've come to expect. Hips that swing forward/back & side to side. Knees & shin swivels with surprisingly decent rocker ankles. No waist joint sadly. The arms however are as bad as I've come to expect generally. Simple shoulders that move forward & back and can't properly stretch out to allow the arm a full range of up/down movement. Though it must be pointed out that the shoulder armor is hinged to move up and down a little bit to make this more manageable. Already an improvement on the core 5 rangers. Elbow articulation is limited to a 90 degree angle only, and the wrists while on ball joints don't have much clearance to make use of them, they also pop off. A lot. The arms are still kind of frustrating to me but this figure succeeds in having a slightly better version of them.
The head is on a fairly decent ball joint that allows for a good bit of tilting in all the primary directions too. And after seeing this same design 6 times over it's still about as serviceable as when I first encountered it. Also a peg hole is built into the left side of the belt area to accommodate the included accessory, or a similar one from another 5" Ranger figure. While I don't own the 5" Legacy MMPR TV White Ranger to compare this figure too, I did have the S.H. Figuarts Kiba Ranger on hand for a general comparison.
Accessories
The Legacy 5" Movie White Ranger includes a mere single accessory. Though arguably this figure has the most appropriate accessory placement of any of the Movie Legacy figures:
1 - Saba. The patented sidekick and trademark special weapon of the White ranger. Honestly this is a pretty great accessory, it's detailed pretty nicely, painted very very well and is just about the right scale to the figure. It has a peg built into it to allow you to store it on the figures hip which is odd. I would have thought a holster would have been more appropriate, especially considering the other 5 rangers have them.
And that's it. The Movie White Ranger comes only with Saba. Unlike the other 5 figures in this line I'm okay with this. Tommy only ever used Saba in both the TV show and Movie. He didn't use a Power Blaster and had no other additional weapons or powers exclusive to him for the film. Would it have been nice for a Blaster & Holster to be thrown in as bonuses? Sure. But in this case I'm not bothered by the lack of them either.
Final Thoughts
And that's that! After 7 long reviews and galleries we've officially taken a look at Bandai of America's ENTIRE Legacy offering for the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie! It's easy for me to admit that a majority (all but one of these figures) were quite disappointing to me personally. What's more odd is that the White Ranger would wind up being the one not only with the best design and QC but the one I liked the most. This figure seems to have a bit more thought put into than the other 5 rangers or Ivan.
