Back on April 1st, the tokusatsu world was pretty stunned by the announcement that Toei was reviving a character that hadn’t been seen in nearly 20 years. Robocon! The star of two previous TV series Ganabare!! Robocon & Moero!! Robocon, is returning for a brand new film adventure titled Ganbareiwa!! Robocon.
Met with some healthy skepticism that the project could actually be real, it was confirmed fully only a few days later. But today, further information of what to expect from this project has come courtesy of an official trademark from April 21st for the film (via @Trademark_bot), which includes its use in branding for a variety of merchandise including toys, dolls, & games etc.
There’s absolutely no question that this film be released on July 31st, and now we know it’s bringing along with it a resurgence of Robocon merchandise. Let the speculation of just what this odd entry in the Robocon franchise could be about, begin! Could this be another generational meeting of the various Robocon? Or a true reboot entirely? Time will tell, and we’ll be sure to tell you as more information surfaces.

Unfortunately this movie is produced by none other than Shinichiro Shirakura.
This is same guy who produced the infamous second half of Hibiki but he also produced controversial Super Hero Taisen movies as well both Decade and Zi-O.
Man! Toei really adores that man, do they?
What's next? Shoji Yonemura or Kento Shimoyama as the writer of this film? They basically Shirakura's goons. (Shimoyama also wrotes Kikaider Reboot which Shirakura produces it)

Here's hoping that jackass Thouser isn't in this movie.

5/18/20 update. The official trademark registration has come through for Ganbareiwa!! Robocon. While this project was initially announced April 1st, and thus most assumed it was a joke, it's actually legit. It was confirmed a few days after the fact but the trademark registration is what we were really waiting for to finally believe ourselves.
You can follow Toei's official Robocon Twitter account for news & updates on this new film project as they happen. For now, rest assured though that this is a real film that's going to be released and the trademark indicates we should expect at least some merchandise related to it. to be released as well.
On a personal note, as a big fan of some of the oddball Toei Fushigi Comedy series and Robocon in particular, it's fascinating to see the big guy get a new movie 20 years after his second TV series (Moero!! Robocon) ended. Itself having aired 25 years after the premiere of the original Robocon TV series (Ganbare!! Robocon). It's taken Robocon a couple decades in between each time, but he's definitely a character with some unique longevity to him.

Oh, damn, I came in here thinking this was the dog metal hero that Toei wants everyone to forget
Still, looking into the guy, I'm curious as to how a movie starring him will do~

Zi-O's story may be all over the place at times, but you know what? For an anniversary series, I wanted something fun and meaningful. And that's what I got. The story isn't amazing, but the characters are great and the cameos post-Ghost episodes are done wonderfully. Nothing hits the excitement of seeing Riders like Eternal show up out of nowhere. Even if it's for a cameo, it showed that Shirakura cared about making this a celebration of the Heisei Riders, extended outside of the main ones.
Are Shirakura's movies and series the greatest written pieces of Rider fiction? No. Are they enjoyable? Yeah, for the most part they are. When I watch Super Hero Taisen I get something interesting. I get to see characters who would not normally interact end up as the main characters of the movie. In the original movie, the main characters are Joe, Doc, Kaito, and Hina. It's such a weird combination of characters, but it works. It's enjoyable to me. I wasn't expecting some masterpiece of writing, because as a writer I can see how horribly flawed it is. But there's so much heart in it that I can't help but enjoy the movies in the end. I've found Shirakura's works to be thoroughly enjoyable because they have so much heart in them. It's bad if there's both no heart and it's poorly written, at that point I just don't watch. But when I watch Zi-O, for example, I see a lot of love in it. A love for Kamen Rider and its fans. I think Toei picks him because he has a heart for the genre, even if the writing ends up not being that well done. In the end, when you have someone who really loves something and cares about it, you will end up with something that's poor writing is overshadowed by everything else.
