Hasbro recently held it’s latest Investor’s Report and of course a big focus going forward will be their recently acquired Power Rangers brand. As stated by CEO Brian Goldner:
Hasbro’s licensing plans for Power Rangers will resemble the playbook used for Transformers and My Little Pony, featuring a “very robust” line of products “coming from a number of different partners,”
Of specific note to the Power Rangers brand though, is this line in the report:
Power Rangers’ will generate an operating profit similar to Hasbro’s other franchise brands and has a “significant opportunity for growth given where the brand had been most recently,” Goldner said. Hasbro will work with a film studio to develop a new Power Rangers movie as a follow-up to the 2017 release.
Now, this certainly seems to be worded to imply that an actual sequel to the 2017 film is in the works. While that certainly could be the case as a kind “soft reboot” Brian Goldner’s statement is just vague enough to imply it could be a film that is a follow up in franchise terms rather than a narrative one. What are your thoughts on this matter? Could we actually be seeing a direct sequel with the same designs and cast? What would that mean for the distribution rights held by Lionsgate and other parties from the last film? We’ll be keeping tabs on this as it develops, and we’ll be sure to keep you up to date as it does!

please no more helmets that show the human faces inside them.
that just looks awful. I hated that in the movie.

I want the cast and the lore to stay the same, but I would be extremely happy to see the suit, robot, and monster aesthetic get.... I dunno, better than the last one.
Librarian says
Yay for a sequel!
Can't wait to see what the updated Dragonzord is going to look like!
Monster designs will get tweaked because it's all new monsters anyway.
And robot aesthetics will likely get some mild tweaks. Especially after the events of the first movie, where combining is now more integrated into them instead of being a last ditch hail Mary.
Which in turn hopefully means a really badass Dragonzord.
Lore is definitely staying, but will likely get expanded upon.
The cast should be staying too, they wanted to do a sequel. And they'll likely expand the cast some too for new characters.
"Follow up" is said to suggest they want to carry the hype and praise of the previous. To set expectations of the material they expect to keep in what they are telling investors. If they wanted to start over, they'd start the hype on that by saying "all-new" or "start from scratch" etc.
Kurona says
The general aesthetic of the suits and zords were likely the worst aspect of the last movie. They didn't gel well with the characters, they were a result of current overly-realistic overdesigned models ala Bayformers, and they just looked plain bad. Good thing they only appeared for like 10 minutes and were overshadowed by the excellent chemistry and character building.
Sunred says
If they do indeed continue on from the last movie I hope they upgrade the designs and just say time has passed and they are more in control or whatever which is why they look different, etc.
KaijuUltraFan says
I didn't think this looked bad...
this however looks freaking terrible...
captain N says
I Hope hasbro go's for it.
