Hasbro has apparently found the writer for the next Power Rangers cinematic project!

Writer Bryan Edward Hill has been selected as the writer for the next Power Rangers movie, as part of the ongoing Power Rangers film & television universe spearheaded by Jonathan Entwistle.

Hill is a fairly prolific comic writer who is currently serving as a producer on the DC Comics live action series TITANS. His resume also includes a number of comic stories for DC, Marvel, BOOM! & Image Comics.

Hasbro is taking the next major step with the Power Rangers franchise- returning the Rangers to the big screen!

A new reboot of the Power Rangers film franchise has been announced as in the works at Hasbros’ AllSpark Pictures film division. Filmmaker Jonathan Entwistle– best known for the Netflix original series The End Of The F***ing World– is negotiating for the directors’ position on this new project. Relative newcomer Patrick Burleigh will be writing the script for the film.

A brief story outline has been released: The films’ plot will involve the Power Rangers traveling back in time to the 1990s to explore their roots.

Looks like Power Rangers may be headed back to theaters once again!

During a financial call to discuss future projects, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner revealed that Hasbro was currently in discussion with longtime studio partner Paramount Pictures to prepare the next Power Rangers movie.

What relation any new project might have to the 2017 cinematic release by Lionsgate is anyone’s guess. But at the moment, no further details about the future of Power Rangers on the silver screen have been announced.

Hasbro recently held it’s latest Investor’s Report and of course a big focus going forward will be their recently acquired Power Rangers brand. As stated by CEO Brian Goldner:

Hasbro’s licensing plans for Power Rangers will resemble the playbook used for Transformers and My Little Pony, featuring a “very robust” line of products “coming from a number of different partners,”

Of specific note to the Power Rangers brand though, is this line in the report:

Power Rangers’ will generate an operating profit similar to Hasbro’s other franchise brands and has a “significant opportunity for growth given where the brand had been most recently,” Goldner said. Hasbro will work with a film studio to develop a new Power Rangers movie as a follow-up to the 2017 release.

Now, this certainly seems to be worded to imply that an actual sequel to the 2017 film is in the works. While that certainly could be the case as a kind “soft reboot” Brian Goldner’s statement is just vague enough to imply it could be a film that is a follow up in franchise terms rather than a narrative one. What are your thoughts on this matter? Could we actually be seeing a direct sequel with the same designs and cast? What would that mean for the distribution rights held by Lionsgate and other parties from the last film? We’re reporting on this bit because of the fact that Lionsgate was the movie studio behind the Power Rangers Movie. Hasbro had been in negotiations with Lionsgate for a formal takeover, giving the toy company its first real movie studio under its belt. Hasbro has been attempting for years to go from “toy maker” to “entertainment producer”, such as the failed Hasbro channel via Discovery Channel known as “The Hub” some years prior.

Could this have been a roadblock from green-lighting a Power Rangers Movie sequel? We may never know but it certainly doesn’t hurt that a major competitor to Saban Brands and Bandai America, Hasbro, failed to acquire the studio that has the rights to the Power Rangers Movie.

The numbers are in for the opening weekend for the new Power Rangers Movie. The Power Rangers worldwide opening weekend total is at $59.2 million dollars – with $40.5 million from a strong domestic release, and $18.7 million from a “muted” international release.

The movie cost roughly $100 million so a couple more strong weeks could help push the movie to break-even status. Fans will be watching with anticipation as the movie surpassed their expectations and a sequel is something many fans want to see happen.
