Power Rangers Soul of the Dragon Graphic Novel Preview

Posted on November 30, 2018 at 11:31 am by Chris under Power Rangers

The penultimate story of Tommy Oliver and possibly his final Power Rangers story releases next month in the graphic novel Soul of the Dragon by BOOM! Studios. Following Tommy Oliver in his final Power Rangers story, he searches valiantly for his missing son, JJ, who is working with Space Patrol Delta (SPD). His past, his present, and what remains of his future will collide in this epic adventure which harkens to the classic “Old Man Logan” story from Marvel Comics.

Written by Kyle Higgins – the famed Power Rangers scribe responsible for the immensely popular and successful Shattered Grid story in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic – and illustrated by Giuseppe Cafaro – this is a book that any fan of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, or the work of Kyle Higgins, do NOT want to miss.

Check out a number of preview pages for the graphic novel by clicking the title of the story. Thanks to Comic Frontline for the initial release of these images.

Super Sentai Artisan Megaranger Degitaizer and Battleraizer Delayed

Posted on November 21, 2018 at 7:37 pm by Chris under Power Rangers, Super Sentai

The upcoming release of the Super Sentai Artisan Degitaizer and Battleraizer from Denji Sentai Megaranger, better known as Power Rangers In Space for those of us who grew up with the Power Rangers, was originally scheduled to release in December of 2018. Unfortunately, due to what Bandai is calling a “production delay”, the item has been delayed with no current timetable for release.

It should be noted that the previous Super Sentai Artisan releases – specifically the SP License from Dekaranger and before that the Aura Changer from Dairanger – have suffered from quality control issues resulting in entire production run replacements.

The Super Sentai Artisan Degitaizer and Battleraizer had recently had payment requests go out. This is the first time an item this close to release has been delayed.

Hasbro Playskool Heroes Power Rangers Listings Discovered

Posted on November 17, 2018 at 10:20 am by Chris under Power Rangers

Once again the detective work of @PowerRangerTalk on Twitter has revealed even more upcoming listings for Hasbro‘s venture in to the Power Rangers brand. This time we have listings on Amazon for the younger kids – Playskool Heroes Power Rangers! This is, basically, Hasbro‘s competitive line against the Imaginext toys from Mattel. They are as follows:

Playskool Heroes Power Rangers
– Feature T-Rex Zords ($12.99)
– Mega Mighties ($11.99)
– Mighty Morphin Red Ranger ($11.99)
– Blind Bags ($3.99)
– 2 Pack Figures ($9.99)
– Morphin Rinozord ($19.99)
– Morphin Zords ($19.99)
– Feature Wolf Zords ($12.99)
– Feature Zords ($12.99)
– Morphin Pterazord ($19.99)
– 2 Pack Tri-Cycle ($9.99)
– 2 Pack Red/Yellow Rangers ($9.99)
– 2 Pack Green/Black Rangers ($9.99)
– Mighty Morphin Black Ranger ($11.99)

While we don’t have exact details on these figures they look to also span many different series in the Power Rangers history – something the Imaginext line did not do. Get those wallets ready – it’s going to be an expensive spring!

Hasbro’s Power Rangers Lightning Collection Figures Revealed

Posted on November 16, 2018 at 9:51 pm by Chris under Power Rangers

Thanks to @PowerRangerTalk and some database searching through Amazon has revealed the first listings for Hasbro’s Power Rangers toy line, including the highly anticipated Power Rangers Lightning Collection. The revealed figures are as follows:

– Mighty Morphin White Ranger
– Mighty Morphin Pink Ranger
– Dino Charge Red Ranger
– Lost Galaxy Magna Defender
– Mighty Morphin Lord Zedd
– SPD Shadow Ranger
– Beast Morphers Red Ranger
– Beast Morphers Gold Ranger

Another figure listed with the “PRG” (we assume “Power Rangers Generations“) label is simply titled “Ultrazord”, and we are currently unsure of what that could be. A couple of roleplay items are also listed.

The Power Rangers Lightning Collection was first revealed at Power Morphicon with the iconic Mighty Morphin White Ranger as the first reveal. A promise from the Hasbro team that the lineup would be multi-generational and non-linear, meaning any Ranger from any series could be included in any assortment. The figures are in the same style as Star Wars Black Series and Marvel Legends, will contain multiple accessories, have 20+ points of articulation, and the Power Rangers will come with civilian heads that you can swap on the figure.

What do you guys think? Does this excite you for the future? Sound off in our discussion!

Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Toy Listed in Top 10 Unsafest Toys of 2018

Posted on November 13, 2018 at 7:04 pm by Chris under Power Rangers

As the current holiday shopping season ramps up in to top gear, a non-profit children’s safety organization known as W.A.T.C.H. (World Against Toys Causing Harm) has listed their Top 10 Unsafest Toys for the 2018 Holiday Season. Gracing the list this year at Number 4 is none other than Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel, specifically the Superstar Blade roleplay item. As W.A.T.C.H. states in their description of the item:

HAZARD: POTENTIAL FOR BLUNT FORCE AND EYE INJURIES!

W.A.T.C.H. OUT! Young children are encouraged to “power up” with this “Super Ninja Steel” spring-loaded plastic blade, with the potential to cause facial and other impact injuries.

The roleplay item’s functionality is a spring loaded mechanism that shoots out a few inches. The organization’s fears stem from the fact that the item is a sword (meant to be swung at people) and that the spring loaded feature could inadvertently cause facial injury to the wielder.

TokuNation.com advises parents and collectors alike to use common sense when handling a children’s toy and if you purchase the item for your child to be a parent and explain how to, and how not to, play with it. Check out the full press release by clicking here.

Power Rangers Heroes of the Grid Street Date at Game Stop

Posted on November 3, 2018 at 5:19 pm by Chris under Power Rangers

During Power Morphicon fans of the Power Rangers were treated to the Kickstarter campaign of Power Rangers Heroes of the Grid, an incredibly in depth and customizable board game created by Renegade Game Studios under license from Hasbro. The game was incredibly successful on Kickstarter raising over $700,000 when all was said and done. Fans who have backed the Kickstarter will get their packages sometime in July of 2019.

Thanks to @TokuReviews on Twitter, we can now share that video game and collectibles store Game Stop has a street date in their system for the base game – August 31st, 2019! If you didn’t or couldn’t support Heroes of the Grid via the Kickstarter you now have a timeframe of when you might be able to expect the game in stores.

Hasbro Ranks Power Rangers as an ‘Emerging Brand’ and not ‘Franchise Brand’

Posted on October 24, 2018 at 5:24 pm by Chris under Power Rangers

In a statement that seemed to surprise investors and shareholders during the recent investors and shareholders conference call, Hasbro officially recognized Power Rangers as an “Emerging Brand” and NOT as a “Franchise Brand” as many investors and shareholders had assumed prior to the call. What is the difference?

Hasbro considers “Franchise Brands” as the flagship brands that carry the weight so to speak for the company. You will find Transformers, My Little Pony, and Baby Alive in this position. They are the sales drivers of the entire company. Some of Hasbro‘s licensed properties, like Marvel and Star Wars, are considered “Partner Brands”, which they rank right below “Franchise Brands”. And way at the bottom of the list is “Emerging Brands”. An “Emerging Brand” are your G.I. Joe, Littlest Pet Shop, and other low-market brands that you don’t see much of. In short – an “Emerging Brand” is a brand not quite good enough (yet) to be a “Franchise Brand” in regards to overall sales and growth.

The placement of Power Rangers in “Emerging Brands” and not “Franchise Brands”, seeing as Power Rangers is one of the leading live action boys brands in the world, seemed to confuse investors and shareholders. The following exchange happened between one such member and CEO Brian Goldner on the live call:

Linda Bolton-Weiser (Analyst, D.A. Davidson)
Can I just ask about next year? I know you don’t wanna go into too much about next year, but when we think about Power Rangers, it sounds like you’re going to be recording that in “Emerging Brands”. That surprises me being that it could have a substantial revenue opportunity and you’re going to treat it as an important franchise. So, can you just talk about when we could first see revenue? Would that be in April or a very small revenue in the second quarter? Is there any way you can talk about the Power Rangers expectations for what you’re doing that next year?

Brian Goldner (Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Hasbro)
Sure. First, you’re already starting to see some of the Power Rangers licensing revenues come into the company. And we indicated that in our Entertainment & Licensing business. And then in terms of toys and games product sales, that really begins in Q2 next year. There’s a sell-off period for the prior product which is first quarter. We feel like putting Power Rangers in the “Emerging Brands” category is a good place to start. But you’re right. It certainly, in our estimation, is a “Franchise Brand” in the making. And we’re hoping and we’re certain that our great team that is working on the brand out of the west coast is very focused on ensuring the brand becomes a “Franchise Brand” in the future.

So, TLDR, what does this mean?

Because Hasbro doesn’t get to take full advantage of the property until the previous licensing agreement with Bandai runs out in April of 2019, Hasbro has decided to keep Power Rangers in the “Emerging Brands” portion of its portfolio. The revenue stream from the Power Rangers brand in terms of merchandise won’t even hit the books until Q2 reports come in and even then they will be low due to the trickle effect of product hitting retailers in waves. It may very well take a full calendar year for Power Rangers to work itself in to a “Franchise Brand” due to market saturation and post-Christmas inventories.

So don’t hit that panic button just yet. However, if Power Rangers fails to meet expectations from Q2 2019 to Q2 2020, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Hasbro leave it as an “Emerging Brand”. It will be interesting to see the direction Hasbro takes the brand out of the gate. Stay tuned!

Super Americana Magic Force Go! – Tokusatsu Tabletop RPG Kickstarter Game

Posted on October 20, 2018 at 1:19 pm by Chris under General Tokusatsu News, Power Rangers, Super Sentai

These days tabletop roleplaying games are all the craze in the tokustasu community. Recently, Sandy Pug Games introduced a Kickstarter campaign for their tabletop roleplaying game “Americana”, a tabletop game set in the 1950’s but with all your favorite fantasy races living normal everyday lives in 1950’s America. That Kickstarter campaign has already reached its funding goal so it will be released! But now, they’ve introduced one of their stretch goals – a tokusatsu themed expansion! Introducing Super Americana Magic Force Go!

“Americana Magic Force Go is a tokusatsu tabletop RPG setting, taking place in that same fantasy 1950s, but instead of investigating a murder, the party is a group of teenagers given the power of legendary mythical beasts, charged with battling the evil werewolf dictator Xueh, who intends to conquer the world and seize the minds of the Earth’s werewolf population from their massive battle station, hanging high above the Arctic.”

Americana Magic Force Go will be, if funded, a fully developed new setting with mechanics to match – mirroring classic tokusatsu shows and films with an awesome escalation mechanic, unique character generation mechanics and a fantastic enemy creation system to provide the meanest, most special foes for your team to combat!

As previously stated – the game is already 100% funded! This is a $10,000 stretch goal (as of the time of the post they are less than $2,300 away with 11 days to go). There are plenty of different tiers you can choose from with varying prices. If you are interested we encourage you to check out the project, the stretch goal, and to consider contributing!

Everyone at Sandy Pug Games is really excited to make this project a reality, and we’re really looking forward to the stories and worlds our fellow tokusatsu lovers make!

Click here to check out the Kickstarter and to make your pledge! Special thanks to Sandy Pub Games for reaching out and sharing this exciting project with us and the rest of the tokusatsu community! Check out Sandy Pub Games at the links below!

EDITOR’S NOTE: TokuNation.com normally does not endorse crowd-funding campaigns due to continued abuse from creators (the Power Rangers community has been taken for well over $100,000 over years in campaigns that became funded yet never delivered on promised content). However, an exception was made as Sandy Pub Games has items already released in the tabletop RPG community. As always, you pledge to projects at your own discretion and risk.
