Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Epic Figure Pack Released in Canada

Posted on June 2, 2018 at 11:41 am by Toku Chris under Power Rangers

Each and every year, Toys’R’Us receives a 6-figure set of Power Rangers that they sell as an “epic pack”. That pack always contains an “exclusive figure or accessory” that you cannot buy separately. This year is no different! Courtesy @mightymorphinpowerranger on Instagram we now know what’s inside the pack! And for fans of Kelson Henderson, the actor who plays Mick on Power Rangers Ninja Steel and Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel, it’s your chance to own his first official Power Rangers toy!

Here’s the part that will undoubtedly frustrate some fans. The item is still exclusive to Toys’R’Us. This figure pack was found in a store in Canada. For those following the situation with Toys’R’Us, the Canadian stores are NOT closing. With the US Toys’R’Us stores – they are closing at the end of the month and the distribution centers have closed meaning no new product will arrive.

Get in touch with your Canadian friends! $49.99. Happy hunting!

Now Official – Toys’R’Us to Close or Sell All 735 US Stores

Posted on March 15, 2018 at 1:26 pm by Toku Chris under General Tokusatsu News, Power Rangers

After 70 years in business, the biggest toy store there is simply won’t be anymore. Today Toys’R’Us filed papers in court to begin the immediate process of liquidating and selling all of it’s US store operations for both Toys’R’Us and Babies’R’Us.

Toys’R’Us filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection in September of 2017 and received an influx of cash of $3.1 billion dollars to maintain business operations over the 2017 Holiday Shopping Season. Through court documents we now see just how bad this Holiday Shopping Season was for Toys’R’Us – Quarter 4 of the 2017 Fiscal Year brought in only $81 million dollars for Toys’R’Us compared to $347 million in Quarter 4 of 2016. To quote CEO David Brandon, their financial results were “worse than worst case scenario”. To remain open, Toys’R’Us would need to spend $50 million to $100 million per month which the company is incapable of doing.

The small, silver lining to this scenario is that there are potential plans for the Toys’R’Us Canada branch to outright purchase a select number of stores – possibly close to 200 – and allow them to remain open. However, until such a deal is reached, every single Toys’R’Us and Babies’R’Us store in the United States will begin the process of liquidation.

It’s a sad day for the toy industry. Toys’R’Us is estimated to make up 15% of all the total toy sales in the United States, putting huge burdens on major manufacturers like Hasbro and Mattel to find a way to make up for that change. Hasbro, in recent investor calls, has already stated plans in place currently to help minimize the overall effect and that they are confident they will come out of this mostly unscathed. Mattel on the other hand is close to filing for bankruptcy themselves, having recently suspended dividend following poor sale results in the recent quarter.

We’s sharing the following jingle by Twitter user @ChaseHolfelder in memory of the “Biggest Toy Store There Is”. Our thoughts are with the estimated 33,000 workers who will soon be out of a job. If there are any changes to the news, or Toys’R’Us Canada does end up purchasing some US stores to keep them open, we will share that with you.

It's official. @ToysRUs just announced they're closing all 800 of their U.S. stores. If you haven't lit a candle while listening to my minor-key version of their classic jingle… now is the time. #ToysRUs #RIPToysRUs #ToysRUsKid #ToysRUsKids 😭 pic.twitter.com/rsvXznPVBB

Toys’R’Us Updates – Liquidation Announcement Expected Thursday – Some Stores to Remain?

Posted on March 14, 2018 at 5:32 pm by Toku Chris under Power Rangers

We’ve been sharing Toys’R’Us news stories on our Twitter account @TokuNation a lot lately. The reason we’re doing that is because as a site that frequently promotes toys and collectibles, losing the largest toys and collectibles retailer in the world is kind of a big deal.

Toys’R’Us is expected to file liquidation papers today (Wednesday) to give to the court tomorrow (Thursday). This will officially mark the end of Toys’R’Us in the United States as we know it. A report from the Wall Street Journal states that CEO David Brandon announced to home office personnel in a conference call today (Wednesday) that the company is filing liquidation papers today for the court hearing tomorrow (Thursday).

Earlier today, Toys’R’Us UK also announced liquidation with all UK stores closing within the next 6 weeks. Toys’R’Us Canada is seemingly in a better place financially with no updates on their situation, and Toys’R’Us Asia is actually profitable and is expected to be sold to other shareholders in China turning them in to majority shareholders and giving them control of business operations.

A report from CNBC has come out stating that Toys’R’Us may also keep up to 200 US stores open after liquidation, combining those stores with the Toys’R’Us Canada operation, effectively making Toys’R’Us (in the US at least) a Canadian retailer operating in the United States. Those 200 stores would undoubtedly be profitable stores with favorable real estate deals. However, at the time of this posting, there is no concrete information available to share on that note.

As more news breaks we will share it with you. A complete liquidation of US Toys’R’Us stores will result in a 33,000 loss of employees, making it the largest retailer to shut down (in terms of employee size) since Sports Authority went out of business at the end of 2016. Our thoughts are with all the families suffering with the fate of their future paychecks.

Toys R Us to Close 182 Stores Across USA

Posted on January 24, 2018 at 11:58 am by Toku Chris under Power Rangers

NOTE: The list of closures includes Babies’R’Us stores but are not specifically notated in the list provided. Please check the address of the store(s) closing in your area to determine if it is a Toys’R’Us, Babies’R’Us, or a combination location.

We all knew this was coming. And at times like this it’s best to just rip off the bandaid rather than make it slow and painful. Toys’R’Us announced today through court filings regarding it’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy that it will close 182 stores across the United States.

If you haven’t been following the story regarding Toys’R’Us and it’s ongoing bankruptcy issues, the holiday season was not a strong one for the embattled retailer. Overall sales for the classic toy store were down anywhere from 10% to 20% of projections which helped lead to the decision to cut ties with under-performing stores or stores with unfavorable leases.

As if a punch to your gut wasn’t enough – these are labeled as “initial” closings. Some of these stores may be turned in to Babies’R’Us and Toys’R’Us combo stores while other stores may end up on the chopping block as well. There is a slight chance that a few of the stores listed for closure will remain open if leases with landowners can be restructured.

How does this have any relation to a website about tokusatsu, you ask? Bandai America has partnered with Toys’R’Us to be their primary exclusive retailer option, where the Power Rangers Legacy line first premiered and has continued to offer exclusive offerings (namely every Megazord released thus far). One of the primary reasons for the Toys’R’Us Chapter 11 bankruptcy was due to the fact that Toys’R’Us was unable to pay the toy companies (especially Mattel and Hasbro) for the product that they ordered to carry in their stores. That inability to pay caused less than projected profit numbers for toy companies in Q4 of 2017. Some fans speculate that the lack of any new Power Rangers Legacy Megazords (looking at you, Legacy Shogun Megazord) is due to the fact Toys’R’Us is currently involved in these Chapter 11 bankruptcy dealings. Hopefully we will have more information on that specific item, and future Legacy Megazord items, at next month’s Toy Fair New York City.

For a full list of stores closing in the United States, please click “Read More”. For our friends in Canada, there are currently no plans to close any Toys’R’Us stores in Canada.

ToysRUs Considers Closing Up to 200 Stores in United States

Posted on December 18, 2017 at 11:12 pm by Toku Chris under Power Rangers

With the weight of declining retail sales this holiday season, reports are coming out from Bloomberg that Toys’R’Us, the only remaining national toy store, is considering closing up to 200 of its retail stores after the holiday season.

Toys’R’Us filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection in September as it was unable to pay the millions of dollars of debt that was coming due. However, due to its inability to pay toy manufacturers for the product on its shelves – specifically Hasbro and Mattel – the toy shopping season has dropped upwards of 15% compared to last year.

The exact number of potential store closings is only speculation, but the report from Bloomberg states from insiders that the company is projecting at least 100 stores and up to 200 stores total. This report comes on the heels of another report that stated Toys’R’Us won the ability in court to make sure their executives were paid $15 million dollars in bonuses for the 2017 fiscal year.

Our thoughts go out to the hard working employees who could be impacted by store closings. As to what could happen to upcoming Power Rangers Legacy items, which are exclusive to Toys’R’Us, is currently up in the air. We’ll keep you updated.

Toys R Us Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Posted on September 19, 2017 at 1:02 pm by Toku Chris under General Tokusatsu News

Late last night, Toys’R’Us – the largest toy retailer in North America – filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Toys’R’Us has struggled since 2005 when it was part of a $6.6 billion transaction. 12 years later Toys’R’Us is still $5 billion dollars in debt and is faced with over $400 million dollars due in fiscal 2018 which it was not going to be able to pay. Hence the bankruptcy filing.

So what does this mean for all your favorite collectibles? Well, right now – nothing. Chapter 11 bankruptcy is nothing more than a legal stop sign for any creditors trying to collect on the debts that Toys’R’Us owes. It gives Toys’R’Us the ability to reorganize it’s financial debts – which it has already begun with JP Morgan agreeing to finance $3 billion of the remaining $5 billion debt.

As of right now – Toys’R’Us is NOT going out of business. NO store closures have been announced nor are expected during this year’s holiday season. New toys will CONTINUE to come out. Anything that has been announced as a Toys’R’Us exclusive will come out. Toys’R’Us has stated that business operations will continue as normal.

Analysts watching the situation agree that JP Morgan agreeing to finance $3 billion of debt has the potential to allow Toys’R’Us to emerge from the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in strong standing. In 2009, Toys’R’Us acquired the remaining assets (namely the name, trademarks, and intellectual property) of KB Toys, the other national toy retailer. KB Toys filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2004, and later filed again in 2008, shutting down all operations within 3 months of the filing. Ironically, the second bankruptcy filing that killed the business was initiated by a former Toys’R’Us executive who was then acting as CEO to KB Toys and then sold the remaining assets to Toys’R’Us.

Toys R Us Considers Bankruptcy Protection While Restructuring Debt

Posted on September 6, 2017 at 8:01 pm by Toku Chris under Power Rangers

A report today from various news sources (we’ve chosen to look at BusinessInsider.com) tells us that Toys’R’Us is spending a lot more money than it has been earning over the last fiscal year – to the point of $400 million dollars more – and has hired a law firm to help consolidate its debt while considering the option of filing for bankruptcy protection.

This is not the first time the retail toy store has dealt with financial woes – in 2003 the company closed 180 stores across the country.

Toys’R’Us blames a large portion of their current losses not to a failing toy industry but to losses from its Babies’R’Us sister store, which saw over a 3.0% decline in year over year sales and a massive drop in diaper purchases as consumers can find cheaper deals for their infant and toddler necessities online. Either way, if Toys’R’Us shuts down more stores or ends up going out of business altogether, fans of Power Rangers wonder what the future of the Legacy toy line may be.

With the release of the Power Rangers Movie failing to meet expectations, the movie toy line warming shelves in stores, and the Power Rangers Ninja Steel toy line already hitting clearance prices across the country, having the biggest partner of the franchise possibly go under is not something to keep one optimistic about a future of increasingly expensive Power Rangers collector items.

We should know more about this on September 26th when the next earnings report is due to be made public. With the hiring of a private law firm to work on consolidating debt, we assume the report will be dismal at best. Stay tuned for more news on the future of Toys’R’Us.
