Toy Fair 2016 Q&A – Ranger Keys, Poisandra, and New Legacy Figure Details

Posted on February 13, 2016 at 5:39 pm by TokuChris under Conventions, Power Rangers, Toy Fair

We reached out to Bandai America to get a couple more clarifications or questions answered for everyone after our initial trip through the showroom. The questions (and answers) are below!

What do the new Legacy figures come with?

With the main core of the teams, it will be a Build-a-Figure type of system where each figure will come with a different piece to build a bigger figure. For the first assortment, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers figures will come with pieces to build a Megazord figure. Whether or not they will come with individual weapons has not been finalized yet. Sixth Rangers, such as the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger figure, will come with accessories instead of a “Build-a-Figure” piece.

What is the exact size of these new Legacy figures?

The Power Rangers themselves will be 6.5″ in scale, and the figure they create will be 7.5″ in scale. They will retail for roughly $20.

The fans still want to know – are we going to get a Poisandra figure?

There is no update for a Poisandra (or Keeper) figure at this time.

At New York Comic Con it was stated that Bandai America was working to get the remaining Ranger Keys released. Nothing is displayed at Toy Fair. What is the status of those remaining keys – are they coming out, or are they cancelled?

The product manager who is in charge of Ranger Keys did not make the trip to Toy Fair so unfortunately their final status is unknown as of this posting. If we get the answer later on we will be sure to update.

If we get any more updates, we will post them up for everyone.  We did ask about a possible Talon Ranger figure, but that question was skipped by Bandai America.

Hypabol.com Industry Insider – Power Rangers Executives Didn’t Want Girl Toys

Posted on January 22, 2016 at 3:10 pm by TokuChris under Power Rangers

Everyone by now has seen the movie Star Wars the Force Awakens, unless you’re an avid Star Trek fan and despise anything from the light or dark side. As for the rest of us, we know that one of the main characters in that movie is none other than Rey, the scavenger who ends up playing an incredibly large and important role in the movie, so much to the point that many believe she is the new figurehead of the Star Wars franchise moving forward. But for us toy collectors we can all agree on one thing – there isn’t much Rey out there to purchase (maybe … two figures so far?) given that this movie is now the third largest grossing movie in the entire world.

The folks at Hypable.com have posted an article where they’ve spoken to an “industry insider” (who wishes to remain anonymous) who claims that the missing Rey product wasn’t accidental – that in fact, the executives of Star Wars purposely asked vendors of Star Wars product to leave the character out of their plans stating that “no boy wants to be given a product with a female character on it”. The article goes on to make a statement regarding our beloved Power Rangers franchise.

“Diminishing of girl characters is common in the industry,” the anonymous source relates. “Power Rangers asked us to do it. Paw Patrol, too.” Allegedly, this philosophy has developed into a solid mandate in the toy industry to “maintain the sharp boy/girl product division” and “marginalize girl characters in items not specifically marketed as girl-oriented.”

This sort of practice is VERY evident if you’re a Power Rangers collector – namely the missing female Ranger Keys from the Power Rangers Super Megaforce toy line, not to mention the severe lack of a Poisandra figure in Power Rangers Dino Charge and the rather poor case assortments when a girl figure is included (ie: 1 or maybe 2 total figures in a case of 12). Another case in point – the Legacy Vehicles that have been released at Toys’R’Us that feature a Saber-tooth Tiger zord but with a Green Ranger figure and not the Yellow Ranger figure. And let’s not forget the initial “purple” triceratops zord for Power Rangers Dino Charge back at SDCC 2014 to which the statement “Boys don’t want to buy pink toys” was uttered, then retracted at Power Morphicon 2014 (stating the fans had been heard), and then denied that it ever happened altogether by the end of that convention (stating it had yet to be painted … even though it was clearly hand-painted purple).

Now many would be quick to blame Bandai America for these slights. And while maybe perhaps a bit of the blame is indeed on them, the most important thing to remember is that they are simply a license holder – Saban Brands decides who gets to make product for the franchise and gives direction (and approval) on all product. That would mean that this “decision” would come from Saban Brands more than anyone else, but that the overall marketing strategy is “if your making action figures, make them for boys, and boys don’t want girl action figures”.

However – things do seem to be turning around. Bandai America stated at the last New York Comic Con that they plan to finish the Ranger Keys that were missing, specifically the girls, and more girl figures have been released (Pink Ranger, Dino Drive Pink Ranger, Dino Steel Pink Ranger, Purple Ranger, Dino Drive Purple Ranger). With such strong female characters written by the Power Rangers Dino Charge team, like Shelby (played by Camille Hyde) and Kendall (played by Claire Blackwelder) it is refreshing to see toys of these characters on the shelves.

Hopefully as we continue to progress forward and break down barriers, toy manufacturers and the executives behind the franchises will stop trying to tell us what is a boy’s toy and what is a girl’s toy and just focus on creating strong representations of strong characters and let the customers decide for themselves.

Power Rangers Dino Charge Episode 12 – Knight After Knights – Production Stills

Posted on September 17, 2015 at 2:29 pm by TokuChris under Power Rangers

We received some production stills for the next episode of Power Rangers Dino Charge titled “Knight After Knights”. The episode features Ivan the Gold Ranger trying to decide whether or not to join the team of the Power Rangers – and unfortunately, the monster Bones shows up and starts stealing the Rangers’ back-bones, making them look like cowards.

Can Shelby the Pink Ranger convince Ivan to still join the team as well as to save the others? The brand new episode airs Saturday, September 19th on Nickelodeon. Click the title of the story to check out the episode production stills provided to us by Saban Brands for the Power Force, of which we are a part of. We’ve also included the preview clip below!

Because this episode accidentally uploaded to Nick.com early, many fans have already seen the episode. For those that have, we’ve linked our episode poll and discussion for the episode in the forums and have left it open so you can begin discussing the episode. SDCC 2015: TokuNation Interviews Bandai of America

Posted on July 12, 2015 at 11:48 pm by Den-O under Conventions, Power Rangers, San Diego Comic Con

Rounding out our coverage of San Diego Comic Con 2015 we have a couple gems to share with you. Our own Kickback just sat down with Bandai of America for an interview on current & upcoming products and a few other goodies fans have been clamoring for with Power Rangers Legacy & Dino Charge.

Starting things off we discussed Power Rangers Legacy items. These releases were apparently never meant to be chronological like collectors had assumed, it happened to just turn out that way. Bandai knows that the Ninja & Shogun Megazords as well as the Falconzord are all very obvious choices for the future. Power Rangers Zeo is also internally very popular. They also think a Legacy Gold Zeo Ranger Staff is a interesting idea ;) Legacy Tor was mentioned as well but as a whole they don’t want to destroy collectors’ wallets.

The Thunder Megazord shown at SDCC should be able to assumed the Assault Team sled mode, but they’ll get with their designers and give us an answer post-con. The Legacy Blade Blaster displayed was entirely a mock-up as the retail version wasn’t ready yet. They would like to do a role play item and a mech/figure item together if possible kinda like Saba and Tigerzord. Again they don’t want to break the bank. Fans have also asked recently about a Black & Gold Dragonzord, so we posed that question to Bandai. There response is “would fans buy it?”

For Dino Charge Bandai still asserts that if a Ranger appears in show, of which there’s likely to be 11 between DC & Supercharge, then there’s a very good chance to see it in toy form.  When asked about any possible gender swaps or sash swaps in the show, they referred back to the first answer. Bandai is also taking this position with Megazords, if it appears in the show footage it’s very likely to receive a toy. Villain figures are a key point of interest to Bandai as well since this is the first time since MMPR that waves are predominantly villains. Poisandra however is still cloudy. While Bandai is looking into it, it depends entirely on the characters trajectory in the show. They simply don’t know currently. The same can be said for why no Supercharge items were displayed – if it hasn’t been revealed in the show then they can’t necessarily show it in toy form without approval from Saban Brands.

Fans of Ranger Keys from Super Megaforce will also be sobered a bit.  Currently no plans for more Ranger Keys as the play pattern is no longer current.  Speaking of exclusives Bandai confirmed that they are upping their game for New York Comic Con to match the cons size. They will have an exclusive of some kind for this years show.

Bandai of America takes the fan opinion very seriously. They also want to cater to collectors and use the Legacy line as well as conventions to try and do that. They encourage fans to let them know what they think at conventions and such.

We’d like to thank Bandai of America for their time over the weekend for answering our questions and being awesome in general. The team is super excited for the future and can’t wait to show you what’s in store next. They hope you’ll come see them at this year’s NYCC.

Talkin Toku Episode 024 – Power Rangers Dino Charge Premiere Reaction – Released!

Posted on February 6, 2015 at 11:47 pm by TokuChris under Power Rangers, TokuNation, TokuNation Site Updates

For over a year, the hosts of Talkin Toku have relentlessly shared their negative opinions towards Power Rangers Megaforce and Power Rangers Super Megaforce. To the point that some in the fan community choose not to listen to us because we refuse to accept anything less than GOOD writing, GOOD acting, and GOOD story-telling. We are labeled as “haters”, and “just more people bashing Power Rangers”. To that we say THANK YOU – we refuse to accept something just because the name is slapped on it, and for the last four years that is exactly what we’ve had – poor story-telling, poor acting (from most, not all), poor direction, poor editing, and poor decisions regarding the television program that we all grew up with as kids.

On Saturday, February 7th, kids across the world will be introduced to Power Rangers Dino Charge, the next iteration of the fabled Power Rangers franchise. Returning to helm the show is fan-favorite executive producer Chip Lynn, who many praised before the first episode was even released. Will his presence be felt? Or is Power Rangers now forever destined to be a mere “Google translate” show of Super Sentai?

Join Kickback/Chris, Den-O/Jordan, Sentai Tamashii/Tom, and two very special guests – trekkieb47/Eric and baltmatrix/Matt – as we spend over an hour and a half discussing the good, the bad, and the ugly with Power Rangers Dino Charge. Did it live up to the hype? What are our individual thoughts on the episode and the direction of the franchise with this new series? And most importantly (and most shocking) – what did Den-O/Jordan, best known for his utter disdain for all things Power Rangers, feel about the premiere?

You WILL be surprised!

Before we begin the discussion of Power Rangers Dino Charge the group takes a moment to discuss the elephant in the room and the tragic incident regarding Rick Medina, who played the role of Cole Evans the Red Wild Force Power Ranger as well as Dekker in Power Rangers Samurai/Super Samurai. The question we ask – does Saban Brands react in any way, and if so, how?

NOTE! This episode was recorded before Rick Medina was released from jail with no charges pressed (at the moment, investigation is on-going).

And maybe most importantly, the Twitter trend from the night of the recording and the focus of our episode picture is revealed (to an extent). See the beginning of how five nerds started a brief trend on Twitter within the Tokusatsu community and how it all came to be. Unfortunately, we weren’t recording when everything really took off – but we saved the pictures and they are now available for you to view.

Also – we read your reactions to the premiere from Twitter!
