Pacific Rim June Roundup

Posted on June 28, 2013 at 12:07 am by Shin Densetsu under General Tokusatsu News

As this month draws to a close we are mere weeks away from the premiere of Pacific Rim! For those of you looking forward to the 7″ scale NECA Pacific Rim Figures be sure to check out Toys R Us, as they’ve been sighted there this month! There’s more news concerning the movie itself:

Feast your eyes on TV spot 6:

That’s not all, check out the newest Pacific Rim trailer, “At The Edge”:

Also for those of you who intend to watch Pacific Rim in IMAX, check out an IMAX poster designed by Sergio Grisanti! The poster was revealed by Hero Complex. Here’s more on the poster by director Guillermo del Toro:

“I am thrilled to introduce Sergio Grisanti to the world,” Del Toro said in a statement. “For years he has been a highly respected commercial artist. When I was first exposed to his art for ‘Pacific Rim,’ I knew instantly that he was a powerhouse of talent. He created the Jaeger posters/card art we used at WonderCon. Without any hesitation I asked him to create this new Imax Fanfix art. Look at it closely — with a magnifying glass! So much going on! Such power! Such beauty! Sergio loves his Kaijus and his Mecha, and it shows. The poster, like my film, is a tribute to well-loved things. I wish all the fans the best time at the first Imax screenings of ‘Pacific Rim.’ Enjoy!”

Also, an important note about the poster!

The limited-edition poster was created specifically as part of Imax’s Fanfix series and will be available exclusively at the first Imax showings of “Pacific Rim,” which soldiers into theaters July 12.

Atlantic Rim – Your Low Budget Daikaiju Alternative

Posted on March 24, 2013 at 6:11 pm by Den-O under General Tokusatsu News

You may have heard of a little film called Pacific Rim by Guillermo del Toro which sees the return of the Daikaiju genre to the west! Exciting news indeed for kaiju and mecha fans far and wide. However, have you heard of the tentatively titled Atlantic Rim/From the Sea?

Well mockbuster production company The Asylum (infamous for such borderline knockoff films as Snakes on a train, The Day The Earth Stopped, Transmorphers, Titanic II, Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, and much more) is busy producing this latest entry. Shooting has begun for the film in the Pensacola, Florida area and walks the line of the plot for Pacific Rim. As told by the films Second Unit Director:

The storyline is that these monsters come from the sea. The sea floor opens up and these things come out. They terrorize the East Coast from Miami to Washington D.C., and the good guys send them back packing.

The Asylum is notorious for their almost exclusively straight to DVD films, their ongoing legal battles with major studios, and their tendency to walk the line of legality when making these mockbusters.

Pacific Rim Concept Art

Posted on February 16, 2013 at 7:05 pm by Shin Densetsu under General Tokusatsu News

Total Film has posted an exclusive look at new Pacific Rim Concept Art. The images are from the newest issue of Total Film(#204), which is out now. We’ve mirrored the images here. The rest of the concept art(along with an interview) is in the magazine itself. Here’s more info about the images:

You can see two of those exclusive pieces by Doug Williams right here. The first puts the overwhelming scale of the Jaegers into perspective, as a Russian collosus stands guard, dominating the skyline. The second features a freaky Skull Temple that’s fused with its derelict urban surroundings.

Pacific Rim Sequel In Early Stages

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 4:21 pm by Shin Densetsu under General Tokusatsu News

While interviewing Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro, Indiewire let out that there is a sequel being worked on, in its early stages:

Indiewire: You’re in the very early stages of a “Pacific Rim” sequel. If you do that would you shoot it in native 3D?
Guillermo del Toro: Yes. Provided, at that point, that the technology is becoming easier and easier…

He then talked about 3D conversion:

Indiewire: Initially you didn’t want it to be converted…
Guillermo del Toro: Even then they were super respectful. By then we were already getting ILM shots. I was realizing that out of 100 shots, maybe 10% of the shots were risky. They said, “If we go 2D on those shots, we can do it.” Then I gave them my list of conditions. They spent twice of what they normally spend on [this process], because they gave me the chance to pay ILM to do every single shot in native 3D. They aren’t being converted. So all the big 3D effects shots are being done by ILM from the get go. Normally they give a movie a 14 to 16 week conversion time [for 3D]. I started the conversion back in September. So it’s six months for conversion. It’s very classy.

Also attached is a blueprint image of the Pacific Rim Strike Eureka, because it looks cool!
