Gridman anime short announced for Animator Expo

Posted on January 12, 2015 at 1:19 pm by ZeoRangerV under General Tokusatsu News

Tsubaraya‘s Denkou Choujin Gridman (which was adapted into Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad in the West) is set to return in the form of a one-off anime short, as part of Japan Animator Expo – a project of weekly anime shorts spearheaded by Hideaki Anno’s Studio Khara and media company Dwango.

The short, entitled “Denkou Choujin Gridman: Boys invent Great Hero” was animated by popular studio Trigger (most notable for the recent Kill la Kill) and directed by Akira Amemiya – director of Trigger’s Inferno Cop and forthcoming Ninja Slayer series.

The project will see a total of 30 planned shorts air weekly, ranging from anime shorts to promotional and music videos. While these will be streamed for free via Niconico, there are currently no plans for any of them to receive a commercial release.

Niconico have already released a 13 second teaser of the short, however it doesn’t give away anything other than the title. Are you excited for the return of Gridman? Sound off after the jump!

Toei’s Spider-Man & Leopardon Join Spider-Verse!

Posted on January 7, 2015 at 11:59 pm by Den-O under General Tokusatsu News

If you haven’t been following Marvel’s current run of Amazing Spider-Man then now may be the time. Though we wouldn’t typically cover this kind of thing today’s latest issue, Amazing Spider-Man #12 featured the return of 2 very familiar faces for the tokusatsu community. Making his first official appearance since his 1979 TV Series is Toei’s Spider-Man! And along for the ride is his faithful transforming mecha Marveler/Leopardon!

The currently ongoing Spider-verse storyline has seen the entire Marvel Multiverse assaulted by the Morlun family of killers. They’ve been hopping between dimensions plotting to and in some cases succeeding in murdering various Spider-heroes. Now a ragtag team of the remaining spiders with the Earth-616 Peter Parker at the lead are trying desperately to win the war. Just in time to lend a helping hand (and maybe a gigantic sword?!) Spider-man & Leopardon enter the fray! Though it’s only briefly seen Leopardon is soundly defeated with Spider-Man AKA Takuya Yamashiro (or Supaidaman) escaping with his brothers and sisters from other worlds.

A fun and interesting nod to the the beloved 1978-1979 series. Most likely a one-off instance, but personally I’d love to see more of this duo in official Marvel comics of this nature.

VR Troopers Battle Grid Ryan Steele Gallery – Toku Toy Box Entry!

Posted on December 31, 2014 at 1:22 am by Den-O under Contests and Giveaways, General Tokusatsu News, Metal Heroes, TokuNation

TokuNation is ready to present a truly retro gallery for Toku Toy Box, today we’re looking at Battle Grid Ryan Steele from VR Troopers!

This unique form is the byproduct of needing the troopers to interact more on screen & source footage exhaustion. Since VR Troopers used footage from both Metalder & Spielban for it’s first season the characters were rarely seen transformed together. Battle Grid footage allowed all 3 troopers to actually appear on screen simultaneously and fight. The Battle Grid suits themselves were simple spandex with padding, each with a Mighty Morphin Red Ranger helmet repainted to match. Though cheap and very cheesy the Ryan Steele Battle Grid suit actually makes for a pretty fun, albeit very 90’s, figure. Armed to the teeth with more weapons than he ever needed (or  had!) this figure is a fun bit of nostalgia.

Check out 40 images of this classic from VR Troopers after the jump. And of course leave a comment in the discussion thread as well! That will qualify you for a chance to win our Monolithic Monsters Prize Pack as a part of Toku Toy Box! Full details as well as prize pack breakdowns for this giveaway are posted here.

S.H. Figuarts Kikaider’s Side Machine Gallery – Toku Toy Box Entry!

Posted on December 18, 2014 at 2:19 am by Den-O under General Tokusatsu News

It’s only appropriate that after a day of new reveals and in hand images for upcoming Kikaider releases, that TokuNation brings you a gallery of the latest release in the line, S.H. Figuarts Side Machine!

Side Machine is the personal ride of the original Kikaider himself. An outstanding bike with a side car, Side Machine was way ahead of it’s time for rocking vehicle designs in tokusatsu during the 70’s. Seeing as it’s based on the real world Kawasaki GT 500 Mach III bike, Side Machine happens to include a set of officially licensed Kawasaki decals to accessorize it! This is just an added bonus for a vehicle that sets itself apart by leaps and bounds from most S.H. Figuarts vehicles. Seriously this is one of the nicest bikes in the entire line, gorgeous details, crisp paint, and did I mention those decals?! But don’t just take my word for it, check out 30 images of this awesome ride after the jump.

Also be sure to leave a comment in this thread as well. Posting in the S.H. Figuarts Side Machine Gallery thread will automatically enter you for a chance to win one of our Toku Toy Box Giveaway Prize Packs! Specifically you’ll be entered in for our Monolithic Monsters Prize Pack with this one. For full details on entry & Prize Pack breakdowns for Toku Toy Box follow this link. And Best of luck to all! We’ll have another gallery up for entries later this week!

S.H. Figuarts Gil Hakaider Official Images, Orders Open!

Posted on December 17, 2014 at 9:35 pm by Den-O under General Tokusatsu News

Revealed only earlier today, Bandai has just updated us with official images, release details, and pre-orders for S.H. Figuarts Gil Hakaider!

As we mentioned earlier today, Gil Hakaider is the form that Professor Gil (the leader of the DARK & SHADOW organizations) assumed in Kikaider 01. His brain was implanted by a group of scientists into the lifeless Hakaider’s body. This version of the figure differentiates itself from the initial Hakaider with some slight paint app differences, and the addition of his cloak & Gil Whistle staff! The Hakaider Shot from the previous release is also still included along with the replacement shin/holster for it.

S.H. Figuarts Gil Hakaider will be released as a Tamashii Web Exclusive in May 2015 for 5184 yen.

S.H. Figuarts Kikaider 01 In Hand Images, Gil Hakaider Revealed!

Posted on December 17, 2014 at 11:36 am by Den-O under General Tokusatsu News

Well ahead of it’s April release via the Tamashii Web Shop we’ve gotten an early in hand look at S.H. Figuarts Kikaider 01! As usual this type of early look is courtesy of Tamashii Nations themselves and it gives us a glimpse at what the finalized figure will look like, and the accessories it will have.

However, these images also drop a huge bomb. The reveal of S.H. Figuarts Gil Hakaider! Fans of the Kikaider franchise will undoubtedly recognize the emperor of the DARK & SHADOW terrorist organizations as he appeared in Kikaider 01. Gil comes with what every evil emperor needs, a flowing cape and his trademark staff! No release details are known for Gil Hakaider yet but stay tuned as we find out more about this surprise reveal!

S.H.Figuarts Hakaider Gallery – Toku Toy Box Entry!

Posted on December 7, 2014 at 2:10 am by Den-O under General Tokusatsu News, Kamen Rider

Once again TokuNation has another classic gallery for you! A few weeks ago we posted our S.H. Figuarts Kikaider gallery, and today we’re sharing the follow up to that figure with S.H. Figuarts Hakaider! This cyborg is the product of the evil organization DARK, though he has an incredibly tragic secret and past as well. The arch nemesis of Kikaider, Hakaider appeared very late in the original TV series run but is easily the most memorable villain in the franchise.

Today’s gallery of S.H. Figuarts Hakaider focuses on this excellent figures sculpt as well as the heightened functionality it enjoys compared to Kikaider. Such as the higher accessory count with 3 pairs of hands, a replacement shin, and the trademark Hakaider Shot handgun. But let’s not forget Hakaider’s best gimmick, his removeable brain! Yes you did read that right, get ready to create all kinds of quirky scenarios with this cyborg soldier.

We’ve attached a selection of images to this post but a full 45 image gallery awaits after the jump, just click “Discuss on the TokuNation forums” at the bottom of this post. And definitely be sure to post in this thread. The S.H.Figuarts Hakaider Gallery is one of our eligible Toku Toy Box entry threads! Simply join in the discussion after the jump for  your chance to win one of our 4 massive prize packs! Specifically this gallery will enter you in for our:

Monolithic Monsters Prize Pack
– Ultra-Act Ultraman Jack
– NECA Godzilla 2014 (12″ head to tail)
– NECA Pacific Rim Striker Eureka
– NECA Pacific Rim Crimson Typhoon
– Diamond Select Godzilla Classic Bust bank
– Godzilla Minimates Series 1 Boxed Set
– Diamond/Previews Exclusive Godzilla 1965 Sofubi

Good luck to all and expect several more Toku Toy Box entry threads this week!
