Frank Darabont Talks Godzilla

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 2:53 am by Shin Densetsu under Godzilla

In our recent Godzilla 2014 Movie update, we mentioned that Frank Darabont would be finalizing the script. Recently, io9 talked with Darabont, and how his Godzilla will be a “terrifying force of nature”:

What I found very interesting about Godzilla is that he started off definitely as a metaphor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And some of the atom bomb testing we were doing in the South Pacific in the subsequent years. The giant terrifying force of nature that comes and stomps the shit out of your city, that was Godzilla. Filtered through the very fanciful imaginations of the Japanese perception. And then he became Clifford the Big Red Dog in the subsequent films. He became the mascot of Japan, he became the protector of Japan. Another big ugly monster would show up and he would fight that monster to protect Japan. Which I never really quite understood, the shift.

Darabont does not want to make a campy Godzilla movie:

What we’re trying to do with the new movie is not have it camp, not have it be campy. We’re kind of taking a cool new look at it. But with a lot of tradition in the first film. We want this to be a terrifying force of nature. And what was really cool, for me, is there was a very compelling human drama that I got to weave into it. It’s not that cliched, thinly disguised romance or bromance, or whatever. It’s different, it’s a different set of circumstances than you’re used to seeing. And that’s tremendously exciting as a writer when you’re asked to do something else.

Do you think Darabont’s take on Godzilla is going in the right direction? Discuss!

S.H. MonsterArts Destoroyah Evolution Set – Bluefin Release Confirmed!

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 3:34 am by baltanii under Godzilla

Zangyack and cyclones and crabs, oh my! Tonight has marked a flurry of activity as Tamashii Web is updating with the latest exclusives in their various lines in June. Prime among them is the long-anticipated and hinted S.H. MonsterArts “accessory” set intended to complete the upcoming Destoroyah release, from Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995). As reported last week, a leaked scan from Figure-Oh magazine with the name, price, and release month was quickly followed by newer scans earlier today and finally leading to the official Bandai announcement, product listing on Tamashii Webshop, and even confirmation from Bluefin that the set would be coming to the US!

The Destoroyah Evolution Set unfortunately includes no known effect parts, but still accessorizes well with the Destoroyah Final Form coming to Japan in February, expected in the US in March. The set includes three different stages in the growth of the Precambrian crustacean – a less-developed Crab, the infamous Aggregate Form which fought Godzilla Junior in the film, and the rarely-produced-in-plastic Flying Form which preceded the monstrous final form. All three figures are appropriated scaled to their final form as well as prior releases Burning Godzilla and Godzilla Junior and will be available in June at a cost of 8400 yen according to both the earlier scans and the Tamashii Web listing. Bluefin will be releasing the Destoroyah Evolution Set in North America as announced mere minutes ago on their Facebook page with pricing and date to be determined.

Godzilla 2014 – Frank Darabont Finalizing Script, Legendary Pictures Sued & More

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 3:30 pm by Shin Densetsu under Godzilla

The big green monster will be returning to US theaters come 2014, but the path paved for his return has been well, a tad earth-shaking! First the bad news. The initial producers Godzilla 2014 were let go by Legendary Pictures and are now suing the latter. The LA Times reports that:

Dan Lin and Roy Lee, along with Lee’s partner Doug Davison, filed a lawsuit against Legendary on Thursday after they were removed from the project earlier this month. The complaint filed in California Superior Court in Los Angeles claims that they were paid only $25,000 after bringing the “Godzilla” project to Legendary after being promised a much more lucrative deal for their ongoing services.

In a filing last week seeking that the dispute be sent to arbitration, Burbank-based Legendary said the trio “offered little to the ongoing production of the film.” The company decided to remove them, paying only a small “development fee.”

The lawsuit also names Legendary President Jon Jashni as a defendant, accusing him of fraud for his role in the 2010 oral agreement, including an email to Lee and Lin in which he allegedly wrote that if the duo secured the “Godzilla” rights for Legendary, “You know you and your partners will be well treated throughout.”

Instead, the complaint alleges, “Whether out of greed or to show some sort of creative dominance over cross-complainants or merely due to the whim of Legendary’s CEO Thomas Tull, Legendary decided to turn its promise that Lin, Lee and Davison would be ‘well treated throughout’ on its head.”

…..

At the center of the legal battle is a disagreement over what contract governs the producers’ work. In their complaint, Lin, Lee and Davison say they reached an oral agreement with Legendary that would pay them $1.3 million or 3% of the film’s gross receipts — whichever was higher — along with the $25,000 development fee. They were also to have the right to produce any sequels.

Legendary says in its complaint that the relevant agreement is a written one that its lawyers provided to the producers in 2011. That contract allows the company to remove the trio from “Godzilla” before production began with no payment beyond the development fee.

Although Lin, Lee, and Davison never signed the contract, Legendary says it is enforceable because they never objected and continued work for more than a year after it was submitted.

The written contract stipulates that any dispute would be resolved in arbitration instead of court.

In more possibly positive news(this time), Stereoscopy News reports that Frank Darabont(of The Walking Dead TV series on AMC) will be finalizing the script.

In addition, The Huffington Post reports that:

Warner Bros. reportedly looked at Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Henry Cavill, Caleb Landry Jones and Scoot McNairy to play the lead role in “Godzilla,”

Levitt has since turned down the role. So who will take the lead?

S.H. MonsterArts King Kong Official Images

Posted on December 28, 2012 at 12:57 am by Shin Densetsu under Godzilla

The English page for the highly anticipated S.H. MonsterArts King Kong] has been posted by Tamashii Nations. This figure is based on the incarnation of the big ape from Peter Jackson‘s 2005 King Kong remake. More info:

The S.H.MonsterArts King Kong is designed to replicate Richard Taylor’s stunning sculpt. The “volume” of the fur has been captured with exquisite fine detail. Even the scars from battles with the dinosaurs of Skull Island have been replicated exactly as they appear on-screen. These are indispensible details for portraying Peter Jackson’s unique take on King Kong.

The figure makes ample use of S.H.MonsterArts technology to portray both King Kong’s unique quadruped motion and bipedal fighting stances. His forward-leaning walking posture and his standing threat posture are captured with perfect realism, and the sculpt is designed so that the needed joints blend right in visually. The result is a figure that captures all of the power of King Kong onscreen.

Special attention was paid to his expressiveness. In addition to his normal, contemplative face, a roaring and threatening face, and the playful face are included as well. By combining these three different faces with different poses, you can re-create nearly any of Kong’s expressive scenes from the film.
