Happy Birthday Kickback!

Posted on September 13, 2014 at 1:13 pm by Den-O under General Tokusatsu News, TokuNation, TokuNation Spotlights

And you thought VR Troopers, Syber-Squad, & Power Rangers anniversaries were the only milestones this month!

The one and only Kickback’s birthday is today! Of course Kickback AKA Chris is the the founder of TokuNation itself and the man behind everything since it’s inception. A lot of you know him from the TFW2005 forums and his work in the Transformer fandom over  the last decade. But luckily he jumped ship and created this place for all of us to enjoy and share! It’s safe to say that a lot of us wouldn’t have a welcoming environment to discuss our spandex heroes, bug men, giant monsters, toys, and everything else in between without Kickback’s hard work for us over the last 3 years.

So please take a moment out of your day to wish one of my best friends in the world, Kickback, a happy birthday! TokuNation is what it is thanks to you buddy!

Celebrate 20 Years of Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad

Posted on September 12, 2014 at 9:15 pm by Den-O under General Tokusatsu News

With a recent anniversary for VR Troopers, you may not have realized another series premiered only a week later in 1994. Celebrating it’s 20th Anniversary today is Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad! Unlike the majority of other 90’s tokusatsu this series was not a Saban production nor was it adapted from a Toei series. Syber-Squad was brought to the US by DIC-Entertainment and was in fact adapted from the Tsuburaya series Denkou Choujin Gridman. The focus was on our main hero Sam Collins who transformed into the digital hero Servo, and along with Team Samurai would enter the digital world to fight the forces of the evil Kilokahn Artificial Intelligence.

Though the series never quite had the staying power of it’s Saban competitors Syber-Squad actually still has a decent following today. The original Japanese releases of the DX toy line have become just as expensive if not more so than many Sentai toys released in the same era. And even items from the American counterpart toy line produced by Playmates can still command a high price on the secondary market. Just last year Mill Creek Entertainment released the entirety of Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad on two DVD sets that can be easily found around the $10 range now.

Take a moment to reflect on Syber-Squad and it’s impact on the western toku market, and while you’re at it check out some previous galleries we’ve posted relating to the series:

Posted on September 11, 2014 at 5:32 pm by Den-O under Power Rangers

Mirroring what happened with the Legacy Dragonzord before it’s release, Bandai UK has just revealed brand new in hands images of the upcoming Legacy Titanus!

This whopping behemoth will retail for $200 at Toys R Us this fall, and as you can clearly see is meant to be combined with the previously released Legacy Megazord & Dragonzord to complete the Legacy Ultrazord! If you can’t tell already Titanus is huge and apparently very heavy. Be on the lookout for this bad boy on TRU shelves in the coming months!

Power Rangers Legacy Original Movie Figures Revealed!

Posted on September 11, 2014 at 2:20 am by Den-O under Power Rangers

First revealed waaaaay back in June, we finally have images to confirm the upcoming Legacy Power Rangers figures from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie!

Seen for the first time these figures are modeled on the original Power Rangers suits from the classic 1995 MMPR film. Though the movie came out at the height of Power Rangers popularity there are actually very few toys that represent the things seen in the film. The armored up designs the rangers sported are the most criminally over looked though. But rectifying their absence from a toyline for almost 20 years Bandai of America has created this new assortment of Legacy Power Rangers! The assortment will contain 6 figures 5 of which are rangers (Red, Blue, Black, Yellow, & Pink). The 6th figure which has yet to be seen is the awesome villain of the original film, Ivan Ooze!

Defying all the odds it seems the sure bet of a White Ranger has been skipped for this assortment but will no doubt be released at a later time. In any case it appears that these figures are based on the looks the rangers had in the early part of the film before losing their powers, as indicated by the origianl power coins on their chests. They appear to include their awesome personal weapons that were created for the film in lieu of their TV show counterparts as well, though only Pink Ranger is shown with hers.

For now enjoy several press images of these exciting figures courtesy of the awesome people at Rangercrew!

Let’s Watch Wednesdays Week 14 Kamen Rider Den-O 37-39

Posted on September 10, 2014 at 9:58 pm by Den-O under Kamen Rider

Kamen Rider Den-O is approaching it’s final stop with Let’s Watch Wednesdays! As we approach the end, here’s where we stand.

With the debut of Liner Form things should be headed the right direction. Wrong. It seems Ryutaros was originally sent back in time to kill Ryutaro! And the one who sent him was someone from the Imagin’s future, Kai. But Ryutaros stands with his friends, so Kai sets his sights on Yuuto! In an effort to erase Yuuto from time, Kai will send an Imagin to his past. Will he succeed? Can Kamen Rider Zeronos be erased forever? Find out now.

Den-O Trivia 14
Did you notice something familiar this week? You may not have immediately recognized them but they’re there. Notice that Kai’s right hand man in his first appearances is the Leo Imagin. Leo has 3 underlings with him, the Leo Soldiers. Take a good look at their suits. Stll don’t see it? Those are in fact 3 Zectrooper suits from Kamen Rider Kabuto!

As is often the case in tokusatsu productions costumes are rehashed, reused, and canibalized for the sake of whatever the current production is. The Zectrooper suits were no different. These rider like characters were seen in large groups in Kabuto so it seems Toei could spare 3 suits to retrofit for Den-O. With their antennae removed, bug eyes covered in gold jewels, and the armor parts of their suits painted in gold it’s not surprising most people have never noticed this.

Action Works Metalder Gallery In Honor of VR Troopers 20th Anniversary!

Posted on September 9, 2014 at 1:42 am by Den-O under General Tokusatsu News, Metal Heroes

It’s time to take a moment out of your busy schedule to celebrate VR Troopers recent 20th Anniversary!  Although this series may not be like the Power Rangers juggernaut of today, it’s still a classic! Spliced together from 3 Metal Heroes shows (Chojinki Metalder, Jikku Senshi Spielban, & Uchuu Keiji Shaider) VR Troopers was one unique product. The biggest reasons why the show still gets love is the very awesome actor who played Ryan Steele, Brad Hawkins, whom you may also know as the voice of the Zeo Gold Ranger! In honor of this  momentous occasion TokuNation is proud to present the Action Works Chojinki Metalder gallery!

Released in Japan in September 2009, coincidentally then VR’s 15th anniversary, Action Works Metalder should appeal to any fan of VR Troopers or Metalder. Though not an S.H. Figuart, Action Works Metalder is more than on par with that line even by today’s standards. There’s no way of knowing when or if we’ll see S.H. Figuarts Metalder/Ryan  Steele from Bandai so for now this figure is the perfect stand it for any collection. Though it’s 5 years old it faithfully recreates the incredible Metalder suit perfectly and includes a compliment of great accessories such as his signature Katana and his robotic partner/brother Springer!

VR Troopers turned 20 this year and despite not having much in the way of new merchandise to support it, love for the series is always growing. For now, throw your support behind an awesome guy and follow Brad Hawkins on Twitter @VRBradHawkins. And be sure check out 60 images of this amazing figure after the jump with more than a couple group shots to make Metal Heroes & Saban Heroes fans very happy.

S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider Hibiki Gallery

Posted on September 7, 2014 at 7:54 pm by Den-O under Kamen Rider

It’s time for TokuNation to take a look at one of the most anticipated rider releases in the S.H. Figuarts line, Kamen Rider Hibiki!

Hibiki is one of the often most overlooked Kamen Riders by Bandai & Toei. A unique character from a very unique series, Hibiki and his fellow riders were Oni. Rather than putting on a suit, their rider/Oni forms were their true forms. And true to the gorgeous designs of the series, S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider Hibiki is fantastic. Utilizing the same premium design process that was first employed with Kabuto Renewal, Hibiki was built from the ground up beginning with an incredibly sculpted skeletal frame.

Besides looking gorgeous Hibiki is also armed to the teeth with some of the best and most plentiful accessories of any figuart out there. From alternate hands to his trademark Ongekikou Rekka, several Disc Animals, and some fantastic flame effect parts, Hibiki has it all. As one of the last main riders out there that hadn’t been released yet, Hibiki brings this line closer to completion for main forms. At this point we only need Kamen Riders J & Kiva in their basic forms to catch up to this years Drive!

But for now let’s take a look at over 70 images of this absolutely gorgeous figure. Click “Discuss on the TokuNation Forums” at the bottom of this post to see S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider Hibiki in all his glory!

Takayuki Takeya to Design the Roymudo of Drive

Posted on September 7, 2014 at 2:05 am by Den-O under Kamen Rider

Put another one in the win column for Kamen Rider Drive! Veteran designer/artist/sculptor Takayuki Takeya has joined the crew of Drive as the series creature designer! Mr Takayuki will be designing the villainous Roymudo of the series and if his previous work is anything to go on, then these designs will be spectacular.

Takayuki has frequently worked with Keta Amemiya of Garo & Shougeki Gouraigan fame, and has been a prolific designer in Bandai’s popular S.I.C. line. But that’s not all! Though this is Takayuki’s first full TV series length work with designs, he has worked on Kamen Rider previously. His credits include the final two entries at the tail end of Showa continuity, the Kamen Rider ZO & Kamen Rider J films! Adding to his credits is his design work on an often overlooked but incredible tokusatsu series called Tekkoki Mikazuki!

Thanks to our friends at the Tokusatsu Network for this heads up. Kamen Rider Drive premieres October 5th so remeber, Start Your Engine!

Kamen Rider Drive Tire Koukan TK-01 Figure Official Images

Posted on September 5, 2014 at 3:27 pm by Den-O under Kamen Rider

With the passing of the current rider series Kamen Rider Gaim, also comes the change over of the mass retail toyline. Though this is the first time in many years that the new toyline will have a pretty high standard to live up to. After this years Arms Change line it’s time for Kamen Rider Drive to step up to the plate with it’s Tire Koukan line! Koukan meaning to exchange.

So the inaugural release for this new mass retail line is TK-01 Kamen Rider Drive Type Speed! Type Speed is Drive’s default form in the series utilizing his standard Type Speed Wheel. Also included with this figure is the Max Flare Wheel. The gimmick of this line is the ability to split the figure in half across the diagonal from the shoulder to the waist, and swap out the wheels. It also appears these wheels can be attached to the hubs of each wheel on the DX Trideron vehicle!

Join in on the discussion of this figure in our ongoing Drive Toy Thread!
