Power Morphicon Exclusive Legacy Lord Drakkon First Look

Posted on March 23, 2018 at 12:09 pm by Chris under Conventions, Power Morphicon, Power Rangers

This year’s Power Morphicon exclusive, a Legacy Lord Drakkon figure, has had its first images shown to the public. This figure is produced by Bandai America exclusively for the Power Rangers fan convention Power Morphicon, and is available for purchase by attendees.

Featuring an all new mold, Legacy Lord Drakkon comes with both the Dragon Dagger and Saba Sword. Lord Drakkon is the alternate reality version of Tommy Oliver, who instead of joining the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as the Green Ranger and 6th member of their team, voluntarily chose to remain with Rita Repulsa and conquered the Earth instead. Lord Drakkon is featured prominently this year in the BOOM! Studios comics Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Go Go Power Rangers during the Shattered Grid event.

Power Rangers Legacy 6.5″ Series 05 Found at US Retail

Posted on January 27, 2018 at 3:54 pm by Chris under Power Rangers

The next series of the Power Rangers Legacy 6.5″ figures have been found! Brandon E. posted on the Power Rangers Buyers, Traders, and Sellers Facebook page that he had found Power Rangers Legacy 6.5″ Dino Thunder Black Ranger and Zeo Blue Ranger at his local Meijer store in Ohio.

The Power Rangers Legacy 6.5″ Zeo Red Ranger has been spotted in a case refresh pack of Series 04 figures and is most likely in this new case assortment as well.

Still no word or sighting of the missing female figures. Power Rangers Legacy 6.5″ Zeo Yellow Ranger was listed as Series 04 but as Series 05 is now hitting the shelves, we have yet to see her appear yet. As soon as something pops up we’ll let you know.

Have you spotted new Power Rangers Legacy toys? If so, post about it in our Sightings Forum, which has threads broken down for each state and for countries outside the United States too!

Power Morphicon 2018 Exclusive Legacy Figure is Lord Drakkon

Posted on January 22, 2018 at 3:48 pm by Chris under Power Morphicon, Power Rangers

Highly speculated since it’s announcement and confirmed today through @bboyrealm on Twitter (guest relations at Power Morphicon), the BOOM! Studios creation Lord Drakkon will be joining the Legacy 6.5″ figure collection of Power Rangers. As an exclusive to this year’s Power Morphicon, you will need to register at the show and purchase the figure separately after you’ve registered.

Lord Drakkon first appeared in the BOOM! Studios comic book series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. In an alternate reality where Tommy chose to stay with Rita Repulsa, Tommy destroyed the Power Rangers and combined the Green Ranger and White Ranger powers to become the evil Lord Drakkon! He will be featured prominently in the upcoming comic event Shattered Grid, where Power Rangers from all over time will need to come together to defeat him once and for all.

You can register for Power Morphicon 2018 by clicking here.

Opinion – Bandai America Reaches for Gold and Settles for Participation Trophy

Posted on November 16, 2017 at 2:52 pm by Chris under Power Rangers

The following article is an opinion article written by TokuNation.com webmaster and editor-in-chief TokuChris. The opinions expressed in this article do not necessarily reflect the feeling of other staff members of TokuNation.com or the website as a whole. TokuChris has been collecting various toy lines and working as a freelance journalist on said toy lines since 2001.

Bandai America has a reputation amongst toy collectors of being cheap, “knock off” quality of their superior sister company, Bandai Japan. When the Legacy items for Power Rangers first started coming out, fans began to think that Bandai America was actually changing their reputation by making high-end American exclusive product catered to the older fans of the franchise.

As the Legacy line of Megazords and roleplay items continued to sell well, Bandai America decided to adventure in to the realm of 6.5″ figures with a “build a figure” gimmick to compete with heavy hitter Marvel Legends. Premium paint applications and articulation were promised in exchange for a $19.99 price tag (or, as fans have discovered, now $21.99 in most places). Sadly, the figure line has been riddled with quality control issues since its second wave and shows no sign of improvement.

And now, with the release and revelation of the Legacy 6.5″ Power Rangers Zeo Gold Ranger having nothing gold about him, fan backlash has reached critical levels. Please click “Read More” to hear one opinion on the matter. Spoilers – it’s not going to be pretty.

Legacy Power Rangers Figures – Zeo and Dino Thunder – Found at Wal-Mart

Posted on November 16, 2017 at 12:20 pm by Chris under Power Rangers

The next series of Legacy Power Rangers 6.5″ Figures have been spotted and purchased at a Wal-Mart in California. Dino Thunder Red Ranger, Dino Thunder Blue Ranger, Zeo Green Ranger, and Zeo Gold Ranger were spotted and purchased which has given a sigh of relief to collectors who thought the metallic wave of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Legacy figures had pushed back the release of these highly anticipated figures.

Sadly, there’s been a large fan backlash against Bandai America for the quality of this wave of figures. If you look closely at the pictures, you will see a majority of the “gold” pieces, including the entire armor of the Zeo Gold Ranger, have been unpainted and instead are the flat, matte gold which looks more orange than gold. The same plastic can be seen as the holster for the Dino Thunder figures as well as the Build a Megazord pieces of the Zeo Megazord.

We reached out to Saban Brands for a comment but they have not responded at the time of this article. We will keep you updated with any info that comes across.

Bandai to Decrease Number of Girl Action Figures in Power Rangers

Posted on October 16, 2017 at 3:44 pm by Chris under New York Comic Con, Power Rangers

Over the last couple of years the idea of “boys toys” and “girls toys” has been part of a topic of conversation, especially when it comes to gender identity. Major retailers like Target have chosen to remove the idea of a “boys” and a “girls” section of kids’ clothing in favor of simply a “kids” section. Now, we attempt to stay out of politics here at TokuNation because we like to see ourselves as a way for people to allow themselves a distraction from something you’re likely seeing or hearing about in the 24/7 news cycle however we felt it necessary to bring this portion of conversation to light.

A few years ago we wrote an article regarding a quote from a Hypable story where it was stated that there was pressure in Power Rangers to NOT feature or release girl action figures because Power Rangers is a boys action figure line. That story, for us at least, went viral on social media, reaching nearly 50,000 people on Facebook alone. Bandai America reacted quickly in the convention circuit and announced that girl action figures (and girl Ranger Keys at the time) were coming and that they were not going to cut the girls out of the line.

Boy, how times change.

At this year’s New York Comic Con, Bandai America openly stated to numerous fans in attendance that in the future they would be decreasing the number of girl action figures available in the various Power Rangers toy lines due to the fact that they’re not selling. And, in all honesty, they’re right – shelves are full of Power Rangers Ninja Steel White and Pink Rangers (and Yellow, because Yellow has traditionally been female) and the 6.5″ Legacy line of figures are swamped with Ninja Storm Blue, Mighty Morphin Pink, Mighty Morphin Yellow, and In Space Yellow figures.

Recently, our friends at Power Rangers NOW revealed the press photos of the upcoming figures in the first assortment of Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel. Missing from the line up are any female action figures. Our site sponsor BigBadToyStore.com put up a pre-order for Wave 4 of the 6.5″ Legacy Power Rangers figures. The case assortment does not contain the two Mighty Morphin female Power Rangers (Pink and Yellow) and instead opts to double up all the male figures.

Bandai America has stated themselves and used the YouTube channel MMPRToys to tell fans and collectors that if they want to see the new figures they need to buy the female figures. The quote from Bandai America at New York Comic Con is that the Psycho Rangers, a fan-demanded line of figures from Power Rangers In Space due out (originally) in late 2018, are ready to ship but won’t because female figures are clogging the shelves. This is correct though horribly stated. In order for new toys to ship out to stores, the old toys have to sell first. In this instance, the female figures are the leftovers from the older waves, and would need to sell first before the new wave releases. Hence, “buy the girl toys or the new toys won’t come out”.

In a world where Wonder Woman can be a dominating box office presence and an inspiration for young girls everywhere, we challenge both Bandai America and Saban Brands to do more to empower the female characters in Power Rangers to make them more desirable to all fans, young and old, boy and girl. Instead of being side characters to fill out a roster, do more to flesh them out so everyone will want a representation of that character in their collections. Power Rangers has always been progressive, featuring strong lead roles for so many different ethnicities in times where white skin males made up the majority of superheroes. In a world where discrimination against women continues to rock headlines, Power Rangers once again can be a pioneer in equality if it chooses to be.

However, with Uchu Sentai Kyuranger looking more and more likely to be the next adaptation of Super Sentai, a team that features 12 total heroes with only 2 of them being female, we may have to wait 3 years or more for that to happen.

On the plus side, the official comic book Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, published by BOOM! Studios, has revealed that there was an original team of Rangers before the teens we knew – and they featured a female Red Ranger (along with a Pink male Ranger to boot). So while the collectible side of things seems to be highly male-skewed, we have to give credit where credit is due to both Kyle Higgins, writer of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and Saban Brands for approving these stories and adding more depth and diversity in to the history of the Power Rangers.

But what does the future hold for the Power Rangers toy lines? Are girls really diminishing from the toy line? And is that a bad thing for a brand geared towards boys? And can we blame Bandai for decreasing the number of toys that don’t sell (that just happen to be female)? Or do we blame Bandai and Saban Brands for not marketing their female characters in a more appealing way for kids and collectors alike? Join in our discussion.

UPDATE! (10/17/17) ComicBook.com reached out to Bandai America and they responded. Here is the official response:

“Bandai America is and has been fully committed to bringing ALL RANGERS to fans with our action figure lines. From the very first episode of Mighty Morphin, female Rangers have been equal and important members of Power Ranger teams and our product line will continue to reflect that. As with most brands, we continue to evaluate what characters and figures resonate with audiences and adjust the line based on fan demand and overall business objectives. Fans can rest assured that all Female Rangers will continue to be produced and included in Bandai America’s Action Figure and Legacy Figure lines.”

As of the time of this update we have had zero response from Bandai America or Saban Brands regarding this article. We welcome the opportunity if they’re interested.
